I have rented a little pop-up camper to drag along with my Aerostar on a short trip next month. The camper requires a 7-pin electrical connection. On my Aerostar, I have a 4-pin, flat connector. Do they make some sort of adapter? If not, what do I need to do to up grade my van?
there are adapters avail....go to an RV shop
does your trailer have brakes?...7 pin indicates possiblity of electrical brake wiring....4 pin does NOT support electrical brakes
You will need wireing upgrades. 4 pin connectors only provide for brake lights, running lights and signals. A 7 pin connector has those plus trailer brakes, constant 12 volt power, independant grounding, and accessory connectors. Once you have a 7 pin connector on your vehicle, you can adapt to any trailer. 7 pin is the standard for recreational trailers. You can wire this yourself. I don't know where else they are available, and i hate recommending evilmart, but they have an adpater that can be hardwired that has both 4 and 7 pin sockets. A 7 pin socket comes with wireing diagrams so you can take your existing 4 pins wires and adapt them to the new harness. You will need a connection from the batteries positive terminal to the constant 12 volt connection. If you do not wire the constant 12 volt conection, the battery in your trailer will not charge. If the trailer you are pulling has electric trailer brakes, you will need to get a trailer brake controller professionaly installed. The conversion is fairly straightforward if you know the basics of wireing.
I just heard from the camper rental co. The A-Liner pop-up that I'm renting doesn't require a brake controller, so looks like an adapter or a simple wiring up grade will do.
