Hi I checked my cv boots last week after cowgirl mechanic was saying hers were in poor shape.I found one front one was completley rotted out. I could not locate any that were in stock. So went to E-bay and found a company that makes new american made cv boots . They are the split type. 32.00 includes shipping.thecvman.com
why do a miserable job twice....boots are gone>cv joints are sure to follow shortly...there is enough winter water and dirt in that old cv grease to bring down the Space Shuttle with a full crew
can get new or rebuilt shafts for less than $100 per side
actually the joints are fine van only has 62,000 miles on it.Grease is as clean as a whistle. Always garaged kept and rarely driven in the winter. Just want to keep the greenbean running tip top. Thanks
With all due respect, I don't want to disagree with 96_4wdr, or say he's wrong, he not.
Yet, here we don't have winter weather. Vinyl based boots do rot inordinately fast. I have no qualms over using "split" replacement/ repair boots. I use them on my rack & tie rod connections also.
If your sure your CV Joints are tight I say use it. I know my CV's are tight & I need a boot on an axle I R&R'd about 2 years ago. I ran my last axle until it went bad. It was a year or so after I 1st discovered it was ripped open.
$32 is less than 1/2 the price of 1 replacement axle. Putting a "zip" boot on is 1/10th the time of changing out 1 short shaft CV Axle, IMHO. I'll opt for Zip Boots 'til my axles go bad. $32 is a lot less than $170 plus tax, 4 or 5 hours of small bolts & all that bad cursing and swearing. . . .
I posted here a part # for a split boot that fits a Chevy truck and the Aerostar shaft and it cost about $12.00. Lasted well over 30k. One thing I will say is if you have a bad CVJ, which you can only test out of the vehicle for slop, it will eventually destroy the hub which is $160.00.
the old bean is a 1993 xlt extened E 4wd. I just turned 63014 miles. I put apprx. 4k per year on it. I use it to tow my 950# aluminum boat. Camping and the odd road trip. The rest of the time it sits in the garage. It is in mint condition. I am the second owner .I was friends with previous owner, so have a history.Mywife thinks I'm obsessed with the bean.. Just keeping it in shape. Very versitile. Works for me.
