Towards the end of the winter, the reverse sensors on my '03 F250 started going crazy. I'd get beep-beeps when reversing when I knew nothing was there. I figured that I had salt or something on the sensors, and periodically wiped them off. It was intermittant enough that I didn't notice a pattern, but I definately didn't trust them!
Fast forward about 2 months, and they stopped working completely. Now, I start the truck and the idiot light on the button says "off", and they don't work at all. If I press the button to turn them on, the first time I put it in reverse it turns back off.
I have no idea. My wifes 03 explorer did the same thing. That's why I didn't order them on my 05 350. I wish I would have though. Let us know what you find out.

I've noticed in the rain mine sometimes sense the rain drops... And also when they get salt on them.
I suspect that sometimes when the temp/humidity is just right they MIGHT even be affected by the exhaust blowing back there. I'm just guessing though.
Any kind of condensation will make them read incorrectly. In the winter, you may be seeing some condensation from going from cold to warm, or from the heat of the exhaust either causing condensation or just the plain old 'fog' of the exhaust triggering an idicator.
If they act up when the weather is clear and warm, then I'd say you have a problem.
Other things you might check... Trailer hitch might be catching a reading.
Also when my tailgate is down, they go nuts.
