If i was building a 351W for a 4x4 truck i would find a 351M or a 351C with 2V heads and put the 2V heads on the windsor block to make a clevor engine. A 351W set of heads from 69-77 has 1.84/1.54 valves. newer heads has same as 302 1.78/1.45. A set of 351M or 351C 2V heads has a whopping 2.04/1.68. There is some water passage issues that have to be fixed and a special intake is required but if you looking for power. Adding those heads should boost you around 30 more hp and around 20 more ft torque than a standard set of 69-77 heads with the 1.84/1.54 valves. port and polish them and your hp and torque will just increase more. 351M engines are junk anyway you can pick a set of heads up anywhere. i think they made them from 75-80.
You can buy aftermarket heads now that will bolt on without any mods and boost the power output by well over a hundred horses. The Cleveland head swap is a dead issue nowadays. Any of the aftermarket heads will cost you less than a Cleveland head swap. I worked a set of 2 bbl "M" heads over a couple years ago for a 400M build. The head work alone set me back $700 (new seats, milled on the deck and exhaust sides, new valves, springs, retainers, and rockers) Plus adding a Crane stud conversion kit to adjust the rockers (which I'll never use again, there was one that kept working loose) Add in the cost of a 351 Clevor intake ( another $400 at least), custom pushrods($100) special head gaskets, custom headers, blah, blah, blah and you'll easily spend the better part of 2 grand for what ? 40-50 hp? Sure it'll look sexy, but it will get sent home with it's tail between it's legs by just about any aftermarket Windsor headed motor.
