What is the average RPM range of a stock 302 while driving on the highway.
I recently installed a t-5 in my '71 f-100 and I'm trying to figure what
gears I need in the rear end. Thanks.
As I recall, it was around 1800rpm in Mustangs, although I'm not sure if that was with the 3.07's or 3.23's.
FWIW, most of the Mustang guys run 3.73's behind a 302/manual or 4.10's behind 302/auto. Those take it up to around 2000rpm. Owing to the weight of your truck I might look into 4.10's anyway.
I have a handy little excel calculator that takes tire size and gear ratios to calculate your RPM's for any given speed. If you like I could run some numbers for you, or PM me if you'd like me to e-mail it to you.
RPM= 168 X Gear Ratio X MPH / Tire Radius
Tire Radius is distance, in inches, from center of wheel to top of tire.
Gear Ratio is Rear Axle ratio divided by Transmission Gear ratio.
