6.0 Intecooler Installed

I finally got some time this afternoon to install the 6.0 intercooler I bought off of eBay a few weeks ago, for $150. Had it cleaned out and pressure tested this morning, for $40. No leaks were found.

Install was pretty smooth. I removed the upper radiator cross member to make things a lot easier. This kept from having to remove the radiator. In fact, I didn't even have to unhook anything else. The fit was tight, particularly down by the transmission cooler lines, but it fit. I had already purchased the intercooler tube and boot kit from BCDP, so I didn't need any other adapters. The hoses were barely long enough, but they made it on. The whole job took about 3 hours, and I was taking my time.

I can't comment on performance yet, as it's my understanding that the benefits of the 6.0 intercooler are seen mostly while towing, and it will be a while before I tow anything with it. But, given the amount of towing I will be doing later this summer, I feel it's a good upgrade. The 6.0 intercooler is supposed to reduce EGTs by 50-100 degrees.

I've got a gallery with some pics in it, but here is a picture of the two side-by-side. 7.3 intercooler on the left, 6.0 on the right. Notice the size difference and the smoother design of the 6.0's end tanks, which allows the air to easier use the whole intercooler.

I know you haven't towed anything yet, what about your boost readings? Has your max psi non towing changed at all? Get out there and nail it. You know you want to, and we do too.

Question I'd like to know is the long term EGT reduced the 50-100 deg. i.e. towing temp at top of the hill, obviously will have to wait until you go out, but that is what I would like to know.

Boost readings, I don't know about yet. I didn't have time last night to go for a good test run to check boost and EGT readings on a WOT run -- g/f was getting dinner ready and I knew better than to be out playing if dinner was on the table.

The question of towing EGTs is going to be hard to evaluate. The last time I pulled anything substantial was last September. Since then, there have been changes made to the truck that could effect EGTs, the main one was the switch to Jody's chip. So, I'll be able to give some overall numbers, but unfortunately, I won't be able to compare EGTs directly to last year's numbers.

My first long trip pulling a trailer will be in one month. We'll be headed up to Wisconsin for a race at Road America. I'll be able to give a full detailed report when we get back from there.

On my way home tonight I tried some EGT and boost number testing. I did one run 0-60 on the 100 HP setting. Boost was where it should be, didn't lose any. EGT's really suprised me as they barely topped 1000*.

Next, I slowed down to about 15-20 MPH at the bottom of a hill, flipped the chip to the 120 HP setting, and put the throttle to the floor. Ran it up to just over 70 MPH. Again, boost was where it should be, peaking at 29 psi as the truck shifted to 4th. For the EGT results, they were also lower. In past WOT runs from a dead stop up to about 80 MPH, on level ground, EGT's would be right up to 1200*. Granted, tonight I did a shorter run from a roll, but it was uphill, so the engine is still working hard. EGT's on my 15-70 MPH uphill run just barely peaked 1100*!!! A reduction of about 100*!!

So, based on preliminary testing, the 6.0 I/C does in fact seem to lower EGTs.

That's great JTHarvey. I'll be interested in hearing how your truck tows while on vacation as well.

Thanks for the test JT and the heads up on Black Cloud Diesel Performance. I am expecting my 6.o IC in the mail. I had the winning bid on ebay last week for the one monsterbaby alerted everyone to. I hope I didn`t jack enyone here out of it but it was at $95.00 and not thinking about going much higher I put in $96 and got it. So I also spoke to Garrett at BCDP and he hooked me up with a tube kit that will fit my application. It turns out the locatin of the inlet and outlet are down lower on the 6.0 unit. He is a great guy and will help you if he can and it`s good to buy from our vendors! By the way, Garrett told me he will be changing the name of his company to Pure Diesel Power to eliminate confusion between him and Black Cloud Diesel.

First major tow will be heading to the races at Road America in WI, the weekend of April 21-23. I expect the results there to be good as well.

cnd999, glad to hear that Garrett could set you up with what you needed. I'v always had good experiences with him. He's been trying to change the name for something like a month now. I guess there's a lot of legal stuff to take care of when you change the name.
