cragar ss wheels and discs
i have heard that cragar is or will be discontinuing the ss wheels with the 5 1/2 ford truck bolt pattern, but I know that there are plenty out there. i have an older catalog that says a spacer must be used with discs on ford trucks. i'm going to be using '73 discs on my 68 f100. has anyone else used these wheels with discs? or the american daisys? i'm looking for a late '60s style wheel.

I bought a set of the s/s wheels in the late 70's. In three years the crome started pitting with rust spots. I still have them holding up one of my projects. The crome has flaked off in big pieces. I decided a long time ago to never buy crome plated wheels again.

I too ran a set of s/s Cragars on my 69 Ranger for about 3 years and they went to ---t; rust, flaking, chipping, junk. I done the disc brake conversion on mine from a 76 donor but instead of going with the 5 1/2" pattern disc I used discs from a 72 LTD ( 5" ) and had my rear axles redrilled to 5" - now I'm running 16x7 and 16x8 American racing torque thrust II's with the 5X5" pattern which is more common and available and no more rust.

Stroker,
Great looking truck. Hope mine looks as good when and if I get it done. Got a couple of questions for you.
1. Who did your 4 link rear end set up?
2. Was it a kit or did you have one custom fabbed?
3. Are you still using the I-Beam front end? If not what front end are you running?
Once again great looking truck.

Thanks Scotty1
The ladder bar setup was done by a good friend and fabman from a local race shop and myself.
Everything I used was available:
36" ladder bars adj. w/ standard rod ends
panhard bar
round tube cross member kit
shock and coil springs with the upper and lower attachments
The only thing fabed was the side mounts for the round cross member to the frame in order to keep the correct pinion and ladder bar angle.
Still running stock I-beam front end with a set of 2" drop coil springs which brought the truck down from the standard ride height and by the rear coil/over setup being adjustable the whole package is down: not slammed, but close enough. I'm still debating my choice of rubber for the Americans to see the finish project.

Stroker,
I have a few questions about wheels and brakes, but I am writing from memory so bear with me. I have a 1969 Ranger short bed with the original drums. I want to replace the existing turbine, alloy wheels (like General Lee in Dukes of Hazzard) but worry about the protruding spindle(?) in front hub. The existing wheels have a large hole in center that fits around the dome-shaped cap but I worry about finding more modern wheels to fit it.
If I replace drums with discs, will this situation be solved?
Can I find wheels to fit over the front spindle/cap on existing drums?
Do the 16x7 wheels fit under the front wheel well?
Please advise,
DixieDreg

My first question would be do you have 2 or 4WD? All the information that I have is for 2WD and if a wheel manufacture has a listing for your OEM specs on your truck for a wheel they carry it will work and if you do the disc brake swap your choices are unlimited to any size or style wheel depending on your bolt pattern. I went with the 5 x 5" pattern of the older model Fords due to a great deal on the new torq-thrust II's and they fit great under the wheel wells. To really fully understand all of your wheel choices search the net and do a lot of research; I spent months gathering info to make up my mind.

Hey stroker, wow really trick stuff. Man I thought I was buying my way into the Big Dog club, but you the top gun, and I'm running back under the porch. You engine is pretty awesome and should put you in the 500hp club. I have a question though, why only 8" rear wheels? Does the 4 link help with Traction enough that you aren't worried? I've had 10" in the past and was Traction Impaired with 275/60/15 Dunlop G/T. And I'm Worried about new set up and having to use 9.5 rear and 285/40/17 due to lowering and deciding not to tub or widen wheel wells. Any comments would be appreciated. Trevor the CACWBY in WI.

CACWBY -
Thanks for the comments and also I would like to say your 67 is awesome! The paint is killer and your truck will be a head turner. I went with 8" in the rear because all tire manufactures give a minimum and a maximum wheel size for the tire they offer and I'm leaning on my choice for the rears at 285/60-16 which has a tread width of 11.5" and fits a rim of 8" - 9.5". With the OEM leafs gone I have 12" in the wheel wells and this tire will fill it up without the tub job. I couldn't see cutting on the bed as this truck has alot of history for me personally. It should hook up fine and if someone may call me out to the flats then my 15" slicks mounted on American Racing CP200'S will do the job. You should be fine if you mount a set of leaf traction bars to keep the wheel spin down when you need it.
