Hi everyone i have a 1998 Ford f150 4.6 2x4 i have a coolant leak on the upper intake. It comes out on the back left of the intake through a metal pipe. Well where the metal pipe is (pressed in) to the intake. Now i talk to the guy at ford dealership in the parts he said it is called the (heater pipe). He also told me that the part is 21 dollars but i have to press it inand if that does stop the leak he said i would have to buy a new intake.
Now here is the problem i can not find any info regarding this heater pipe. i don't know how to remove it properly, why it is leaking. I can't find it in the handbooks that i have read so far. Can anyone help me??

Reason: BETTER TITLE
I've had good luck with loading stuff to the gallery.
Go to Galleries tab from the top menu, manage/create, and follow the instructions. It's so easy even I could do it. Some guys know how to post 'em in threads like discount ford here, but I haven't figured it out yet. What can I say, I'm Amish.
do you have to take the intake off, or is there access to pull it out and work in the truck. one option i might consider would be to tap the hole with a pipe die, then thread a brass nipple to hose barb in the hole. other end is the heater hose??
Yes i would like to say thank you to the guy that fax me the info regarding how to take the intake off. In the info that was sent though it does not tell you how to remove or replace the pipe.
To steve that sounds like a good idea but the only thing is that the pipe is pressed in to the intake( i am asssuming) i haven't started to tare anything apart yet. But if i could fix the problem without having to take the intake off that would be great. Please tell me that i am not the only one who has had this problem before. This is my first new vehicle that has computers and fuel injection so this **** is all new to me. I am used to wrenching on old school VW that are hopped up. So again if i could fix this issue with out taking things totally apart that would be awesome. But unfortuantly i am probably goin to have to remove the intake to get the right tools to pry it out.
your welcome for the fax, I looked everywhere for anything that was for just that pipe but couldn't find it. sorry! but I think it is the only way to get to it,is by removing the intake.
The one heater pipe runs under the intake manifold, from behind the water pump to behind the right side cylinder head. It has an O-ring at the connection behind the water pump. If the pipe leaks you have to remove the manifold to access it.
Thanks RacerGuy!
I was afraind you were going to say that. I had looked around after I posted and everything I found stated the same but I thought that maybe someone found out otherwise.
What do you race? I race dirt Supers here in the northern Virginia area.
That's cool! I race a 2001 Rocket chassis with a 415 all aluminum. It's a super late model "dirt". I run several tracks around here, Winchester, Hagerstown, Potomac, VMS and Natural Bridge. My home track is Winchester, it's a 3/8 high banked, dry slick track. Anyway my first practice this year is at VMS on the 17th. I want to try and make the Lucas and WoO races this summer and I haven't run that track much. The car is pretty sweet, we changed up to the AFCO M2's at the end of last season but I was very disappointed with them as I thought that I would have the Cadillac ride. Over the winter we found out what the problem was as there was some binding in the new J-bar from not spacing it just right and the fact that we found that the shock on the LR was suppose to be a nine inch and it was an eight. Just not getting the travel we needed. So everything is just about ready other than my freaking truck. I'm heading out to pull the intake. This all started from a 0304 code and I thought that I would replace the COP and injector on #4. I guess I just did a really stupid thing when I pushed back on the pipe slightly to get more room and then after I replaced the hardware I jerked a little to move it back and I cracked it at the intake. I assume that 9D428 on the 98 will work for the 99. I'll see what I have to do to get one at the dealership on Monday. Are there any tricks to getting the intake off or is it just try to take a reasonable approach at removing it? Thanks again!
Ihave the same problem. To get the tube out I heated the aluminum with a torch and then drove the tube out from underneath with a lot of care not to scar or break the aluminum. To put the new part in I will take a pound of dry ice and set it in a dish pan then put the ne tube on top of the dry Ice then put anoter pound of dry Ice o top of it , then set it in the freezer for a few couple hours. Then use a torch to heat and expand the aluminum and use rag to hold the hose end of the tube, using a rubber mallet tap the new tube into the manifold.
