Workshop Manuals E-150?

Hi again!

I'm adding a second question regarding my recently purchased E-150 (1988). I browsed Amazon.com for books and found several. The ones below caught my eye. Are these "THE" books to have or should I go for other ones? I know that the Haynes and the Chilton are "the same" (but very different!) but from experience I have found that it is always good to have a "second opinion" at hand...

Planning to order me some books soon... :-)

Regards,
Anders Ö, Sweden

The books:

"Ford Fuel Injection & Electronic Engine Control : All Ford/Lincoln-Mercury Cars and Light Trucks 1988 to 1993 (Paperback)"

"Transmissions Repair Book Ford 1960 to 2001: Automatic and Manual (Paperback)"
(Ford Vans, 1961-88 (Chilton's Total Car Care Repair Manual))

and

"Ford Full Size Vans Automotive Repair Manual: All Full Size Models from 1969 Thru 1991 With 240 of 300 Cu in Inline 6 Cylinder Engines and 302, 351, (Haynes Automotive Repair Manual Series) (Paperback)"

I have both Haynes and Chilton's. What one does not cover, the other will. These have been my basic reference books.

Get both. There are still a number of things on my '87 that were not well described or sometimes not described at all in those books though. For one, the computer system is not well described, much of the text is geared towards carb'ed. Perhaps the fuel injection book could fill in some blanks.

OK, thank you! :-) The cost is not that frightening so I think I will buy all...

According to a review of another book about fuel injection on Amazon one reader recommended this title as "the absoultely best" regarding (Ford) fuel injection systems, I have high hopes... :-)

the transmission book is "for fun" but eventually I guess one have to at least adjust the gearbox. I had a Ford Sierra (European) with automatic gearbox, there were two bolts that should be tightened with a specific torque on that one, thats all... Never got around to do it but at least I knew what I ought to have done... ;-)

Anders

both i say.. i have a 87 150 and these books are loaded with non-fi stuff.

on ebay you can get the full shop manual for your year.about 50 dollars.

also you'll find the EVTSM "electrical and vacuum troubleshooting manual"
this is the best i own..........i've help lots of folks here with it... it's small but shows u how to step by step TS alot of good stuff not in the others..it will tell u to go to the ford shop manual sometimes.......then i go here or to my mechanic..got mine for 5 but worth 15 bucks i'd say.

also ebay will have code readers.....ours is the "sunpro" model.........if u wait, you can get one for under 10 buck with shipping....

the paperback u listed i'm not sure of....but if you haven't read all of the site fordfuelinjection.com i would...my guess most of the info in that book is already there.

good luck

I would second what racinrob said and save your money and do not buy any of the following, as they are not worth the match to burn them with.
Bad ones are Motors (was good at one time), Haynes and Chilton's.
I would not believe anything that is said in these or have any of them.
All of the information in these was copied from the shop manuals and they did a poor job at that. Also they try and cover a lot of years with them and that does not work.

Only buy Ford shop (service) manuals for the year of your Van, 1988 would have a Blue cover and buy both Vol. A & B, the EVTSM "electrical and vacuum troubleshooting manual" is good also but I have found some errors in the 1988 E series one.

You can also get the Shop Wiring Diagrams for 1988 E series.
If can not get them from eBay you can get them from Helm Inc. new.
I only tell posters information on the Forums that comes from the Ford shop manuals. They cost more but they will pay for themselves in the long run.

As for transmissions they are well covered in the Vol. A.
The Fuel Injection and EEC troubleshoot is well covered in Vol. H if you want that.
