I have a 2001 F-350 Crew cab and want to get a older (90-01) camper that is in real good shape for Hunting, Fishing & camping. I have been told that some of the older campers won't fit my truck. Can anyone tell me if it's the height of the overhead to the bed floor or what?
lance increased the height of there campers to fit the 99 and up SD,s in 2000 ( i dont know about the rest) anything built before 99 will not fit unless you put a platform under it. most people just make a 2x4 (4" high) and plywood platform for it to sit on. thats what i did fot my 98 lance and it
works fine.
check your measurements of the bed height in both the front and rear, i bleieve the 99's and up are different by 1/2 inch front to rear. then measure from the bed rail to the cab to make sure the over haGg will fit.
most people need 3/4 inch additional spacing and the best thing to use is a horse stall rubber mat,(available at most farm supply stores) they come in 4x6 size so you will need two and then cut them to fit. when the camper is on the mat, it will not shift around as you drive.IF YOU HAVE A PLASTIC BEDLINER, DO NOT USE IT, GET RID OF IT WHEN YOU HAUL THE CAMPER.
Like others have mentioned, the cabover part of the camper may not clear the truck cab on 1999 and newer Superduty trucks. I had the manufacturer build me a aluminum riser and bolt it to the bottom of the camper so that I have enough clearance. Mats or 2x4's will work also. My lift is 4 inches, but you could probably get away with 2 inches.
The other possible clearance problem is with 8 foot campers. Make sure to measure the tailgate opening to ensure that the camper rear wall will fit. I read about a guy that had to modify a camper to fit ( you might be able to find that years old post over in the slide-in forum at www.irv2.com ).
