F250 S/D what size slide in camper will fit

Hello everyone I have a 2002 f250 superduty supercab shortbox 4x4 with a v10 automatic and stock 3:73 gears, it also has the camper pkg and tow pkg, I need to know what the biggest size slide in camper I can safely haul with it, I know an 8 foot camper will fit but how about an 8.5-9 foot. I willl be purchasing an older camper probably late 70s to early 80s models I need to know how big I can go so im not limited to just one size thanx in advance for your input guys.

your box should measure 6' 10" with the tailgate down it should be about 8' 10".An 8.5 should still be just on the tailgate. I wouldn't go to a 9 because the center of gravity is going to be back a little to far to the rear. also if your getting and older one they also way a little bit more.
your post is from may did you get a camper yet?

Hi Kelly, yes I picked up a 1985 9ft skylark camper,it was in excellent shape the weight on this was 1370 lbs dry, I dont think I will have much problem hauling this one, truck has the add a leaf so it doesnt sag like crazy will be hauling my quad behind it too on a small utility trailer, the guy I purchased had it on his 05 superduty 350 crewcab shortbox.

What are your plans on the slide in? Will it be used for highway are are you going to do a little "back country" camping?

I beleive it hangs off 3-4 inches not much, however all ford superduties 1999 and up will encounter a problen with older slide in campers the roof of your truck is too high and will hit the camper overhead, this can be solved by placing two 4x8 pallets in the back of the bed with tailgate down and some 2x6 on top if necessary to raise the height of the camper in order to clear it, know if you have a box liner and or heavy duty rubber mats this will give you some extra inches you may not need the extra wood, be carefull to measure the exact height as each camper may vary you dont want to damage your truck, a 9ft will fit nicely, as for me yes I will be going off road but i will be limited to the milder logging roads to get to camp, I was told that when I bought it carfull not to do extreme 4x4, the extra length is great and allows for a seperate washroom which is great if you have small kids
