Rear Hatch Problems

Has anyone else had a problem with the latch mechanism inside the door near the locking rod?
For the last 3 years or so the latch mechanism which pushes the rod down to release the rear hatch has slid off of the actuating rod. I have tried various means to keep the mech. on the rod including a blob of epoxy putty (which seems to have lasted the longest) but now I have to take the door panel off to monkey around with it again. Any suggestions?

Have you replaced the plastic retainer that slips over the rod? If I remember correctly and we're discussing the same thing, the rod slips through a washer-like end of it after it goes into the latch, and then the other end of the retainer snaps over the rod to secure it. I've purchased them in packs at auto supplies.

I never saw a retainer on the rod when I first had the problem. This may also have been why I have been having the problem. Never had the problem on the 92 I used to have... only the 95. Thanks for the reply.
