Cant i just take the box out and replace with the cone filter and still leave the tube that sends air from the outside pointing towar the filter to get air from the out side do you know what i am trying to say. if not sorry.
I have had the air inlet tube for 460 engine F-350 over a year now and it works great with K & N drop in. The tube replaces the one on top of the radiator and gets forced air from the rectangular hole beside the radiator. $18 from Ford. The engine really roars on the highway pulling 4-wheelers up long hills and it really will suck the gas to match the forced air if that is what you wish. MPG with trailer is about 11 on highway.
I have no experience with the cone except love it on my 4-wheeler but it is in a good air box. In my opinion, since you are going to play in the mud I would chose to keep the stock airbox, stock air inlet tube, and would ever consider Motocraft filter over K & N because it may not alway be muddy but dusty where you play. K & N may let more air in but, especially when new, IMO I would be suspicious of very fine dust particle getting through. Dust is not your engine's friend. The ford engineers designed it that way for a reason. On the highway, I like the 460 tube and drop in K & N.
The stock Bronco air inlet tube runs from the top of the radiator to the side of the air box near the botttom. You can remove it easily at the top and when you lift the filter you can see where to squeeze the tube and it just pops out. The 460 engine air inlet tube for a F-350 runs from the side of the radiator and sticks through a hole there and the other end just snaps in the air box. Super easy installation if you start threading it in near the master cylnder. It looks like it would cost Ford less to use the 460 tube on the Bronco. If I lived on a dusty road I would stay with stock even though the 460 tube is curved in front to discourage water and dust from blowing in. The advantage is air is rammed in and is cooler because it does not come from the engine compartment but from the area in front of the radiator.
I recently installed a K&N FIPK. I have had it for some time but I was hesitant to install it because of issues that I read about them: namely (A) they do not provide as good filtration as paper filters and (B) as previously stated on this thread, they pull hot air from the engine. We recently had a few days of good weather in my area. I went up to PEP Boys to get a seat cover. Every "Fast and the Furious" wanna be for miles around was in the parking lot installing hi performance intakes. When I got home I said what the heck and installed the K&N FIPK. I was amazed at the extra horses this provided. I installed a K&N filter wrap to act as a pre filter and increase filtration. I have aslo been eyeballing the stock air inlet tube and am wondering is there any way I can fab it to bring in cold air to the FIPK. Has anyone tried this?
