airfilter

i just replaced my airfilter on my 96 with a puralator filter and that thing does not fit in the stock air box all that well.i spent 15 minutes trying to get it to fit in there rite and i got it close but not perfect.it fits in the bottem fine, its when i go to put the top on that i have problems.
is there a after market airfilter system that is better then stock and water tight incase i feel the need to play in the mud ?

No, the stock system is the most "water tight" intake system you can get.

Why dont you just take the filter back to the store you got it from, and get one that fits.

this may be a stupid question, but are you installing the air filter upside-down?

Why are you using anything besides the Motorcraft unit? It flow more than enough air to feed your engine, and it has superior filtering capabilities.

Spring for a K&N drop-in. It fits and you won't have to replace it EVER. Clean it every few thousand miles. It flows better anyway.

In all seriousness though, thats odd. I'd take it back and make certain it is indeed the right part. I bought what was proported to be a Motorcraft FL1A oil filter one time but didn't open the box before I got home. Ya know, the oil filter for a 99 Mitsubishi Galant just didn't fit real well in my Bronco!

Bronco351 is right too. The OEM airbox is probalby the best at keeping out moisture since its an UPDRAFT setup. Water doesn't really like to fight gravity so its tough to get it to climb up through the filter from the bottom of the OEM airbox even with engine vacuum.

I'm with every one else, The only 2 air fitlers I found that fit my 96 EB was the Motorcraft and the K&N which I have in there now.

sometimes you gotta pusha it forward if youre work on it from the side, the hoses push out on the box, so just hold it down in place real hard and screw that sumbitch up. ive had every kind of filter in my bronco and they fit fine, its just that the top piece of the box with the hoses that you have to wrassle with. if you mean the rubber part on the edges, it might be the brand. get a wix or something. oreillys.

When I bought my truck it had a Puralator filter in it that didn't fit right either. The dam thing was wet from rainwater getting to it from an improper airbox seal. I bought a Fram and altough it was hard to get the box to seal right it finally did after some nudging of the filter gasket. Only reason I haven't upgraded to the K&N yet is because I scored 4 Fram filters for $.50 each at a store going out of busines sale.

Why not do what greystreak92 said, and buy a K & N drop in replacment......if your keeping the stock airbox...?
You will not have to buy another air filter ever again........just clean and re-oil. The K & N lets the engine breathe a bit better......
And......it fits nice and snug!

i bought that k&n filter about a year ago and i like it a lot, it really helps power wise and havent had any problems with it yet. I cant remember how often they recomend you clean it, but if ive been mudding or in real dusty situation i like to clean it, just in case.

I am not so sure you would call them "problems", but you will negate any increase in performance you would have gained by sucking in hot air from under the hood, instead of nice cold air from out in front of the truck, via your stock intake ducting.
I am throughly convinced that unless you plan on going with some sort of cold air intake, that the use of a cone filter is not worth it.......it sure looks cool though.....but looks ain't what moves me and my Bronco up the road!
