I pulled the motor out of a `66 T- BIRD to put in my `71 F-250 and I`m curios about the numbers on it. The casting code reads C6ME- and there`s a letter A made by a grease pencil or something just above the lifter galley,it`s got the 428 inside the freeze plug hole and on the back of the block is an big A mark and it says 66 427. I measured the bore @ 4.160 and the pistons are .030 oversize. The crank is 1U. Why does it say 427 ?
The 66-427 you see is just the rear bulhead of the 427 sideoiler mold that was used. For some reason there were ALOT of 390-428 blocks cast with that. If you look at the lower left side on the back of the block you'll see the "8" shaped boss that on a 427 is the rear galley plug and pressure releif valve. Seeing that and the 66-427 gets some people thinking it's a 427 which it's not. Sounds like a nice score on a 428 tho. Congrats.
Thanks for the reply FFR428.I dropped it of at the shop to have it checked for cracks,so far it looks like a good piece. If it is good I was looking at a stroker kit from Kieth Craft that they have on special that would bring it out to 462
