Hey Geoff........Dave here.... I am also thinking about getting the muffler AND the muffler delete pipe, just in case the ole lady says it's too loud..........Would rather hear the turbo whine than her....Thanks for the words of wisdom.....Dave
Personally, I like the muffler. The truck "purrs" (like a tiger) until you really open it up. In a thread a few weeks ago I said that I'm a contractor with a lot of clients that may not appreciate the cackle of a straight pipe. My wife, who normally poo-poos anything I enjoy and sucks the happiness and life out of me when ever she gets the chance...oh, sorry. Anyway, she likes the sound.
Dave, one more thing. When you get the system, you have the option of turning the muffler either way. Facing the open ends of the dimples toward the turbo will muffle it. Facing them away will be almost like a straight pipe.

that is exactly what i thought when i put my muffler that way. not so. it is amazing how restrictive (in terms of sound) those little dimples are. next time you are working on your truck and it requires you to remove the over-axle hump, start the truck up with the piping pre-muffler.
the way a straight pipe came about my way, was i put just the downpipe back in after fixing an "oil" leak that turned out to be a fuel fitting that wasn't it, and i started the truck with just the downpipe, and i could not believe the sound. it sounded awesome. from then on, i left the muffler sit in the corner.
Kris, how is the sound different with all the pipes in verses only the DP? Tenn01PSD350 ran his like that for a while. Just curious.
Connecting all the pipes, even straight piped, must quiet it down some.
On the 5" I'm sure the dimples will suck up some of the sound no matter which way they're turned. I just suggested it as an alternative to spending any more money on an extra section of pipe.
Hey guys......I just got a quote and response from Mark about his clamps...he said they are "the standard exhaust clamps with a pin in them so they can not fall off. " I'm not sure what the standard clamps with a pin are? Just trying to understand what he meant about the pin part? Thanks again.....
Dave, yes those clamps could "dimple" the pipe if you tighten them down too much, which I didn't in case I need to remove something. (Like the transmission crossmember which you cannot unbolt with that biga$$ pipe there). I tightened them just so (a technical term) and made marks at the connections with a sharpie, and they have not budged. I don't check them that often. Recent posters noted a rattle from the washers behind the cotter pin, this hasn't happened to me. They said that after pinpointing the noise, they simply removed the washers and pins. If you install the system "just so", gravity will keep them in there. It is a heavy system after all. Also, the dual hangers aft of the muffler keeps that bad boy from going anywhere. If you want pictures of the washers/pins, let me know and I will upload some from my installed system.
That would be great for a good pic of what he was talking about. I have the concept but wonder why they are even needed. Like you mentioned the weight of the system should keep it intact...but what does an old retured flight engineer know anyway?? I am on the verge of ordering my cannon system but am still trying desperatly to find someone that can make me some 5 inch stacks that go outside the bed. I have to put a generator in the bed when I haul my 5er to the races, and that would kill any space to put the generator..Thanks again...Dave
Dave, would that pass inspection in SC? They'd be awfully hot and on the outside of the truck. I'm sure you know that, I'm just wondering what your thoughts on that are.
Next time your out on the interstate take a look at the big rigs. I was admiring one this afternoon and he had some awesome stacks and they had a chrome expanded metal heat shield on the outside to keep you from touching the pipes....On my Harley, the have a metal shield that keeps you from coming in direct contact with the pipes.....they are still warm but definitely better than touching them directly..and I would guess that the airflow driving down the road might help cool them too.....something to dream about......

No Dave, I did not dimple the pipe. The pipe will ship with a dent in that tube and it's there for the reason you can see in the photo. At first I thought it was damaged but then I realized which pipe it was and why it was like that. Just snug the clamps fairly tight and mark them. Check your marks periodically to make sure nothing has moved. Don't crimp them soo tight that you wouldn't be able to seperate them later if needed. Good luck and enjoy. Install is pretty straightforward but don't try to hook up the downpipe without help. That is the only part I needed help with from someone under the truck. Make sure that v-clamp is properly positioned before you tighten it down or you will booger it up and be SOL.
Errrr, shamefully I have not yet installed it. It shipped w/out a clamp and I have yet to get one. I doubt it will make much difference but I will be cutting the pipe back when I do install it.
