.060 390 questions

Hey was just wondering my dad has a 60 over 390 block he said i could have if i wanted to build a 390. A guy gave it to him for some work on a pickup. it is already machined and 60 over so i was wondering if i should have it sonic checked before i built it just in case the cylinders werent thick enough. Any opinions? I know the castings change from block to block a litlle bit but was just wondering thanks.

i'd run it and not worry about it. every FE i've ever built i've just bored it out .060 to start with and never looked back or worried..

I think you are right to have it sonic checked. BTW, there are two excellent books you can read that describe all of the issues in rebuilding our FE engines. One is by a guy named Steve Christ, the title something like How to Rebuild FE Engines. The other one is How to Build Ford Engines on a Budget or close to that anyhow (I don't have either of them handy right now). Anyhow, the first is available here or at Amazon. Maybe someone else can post the correct titles.

HAVE IT CHECKED!

In my opinion...

.060 is pretty far. That's either a block that was already .030", or one WAY worn out motor.

I'd seriously get it magnafluxed (checked for cracks) too...

By the way, 360 blocks are all over the place, and are the exact same bore as a 390. If that block doesn't work out, I'm sure you can find a junkyard 360 pretty cheap.

Thanks for the input guys. I have other 390's and 360's but was just thinking about using the .060 over block because the machine work is already done and all that stuff. When i have enough cash to build it ill probly sonic check it just to make sure because it would suck to put all that money in it and have it blow up.
