I have an 86 F-150, 302 EFI, and I think my selector valve has gone bad. Unfortunately, I am un-able to find a replacement. It is a 6-port with the canister filter in the bottom and no electrical connections. Anybody have any idea where to find one or possible troubleshooting tips?
By the way it is called a "Dual Function Reservoir" - 9B263 (base part number) and not a "selector valve". The "Dual Function Reservoir" is not electrically powered, it operates off the fuel pressure of the running fuel pump.
There's no "real" selector valve on 1990-1996 trucks. The older 1987-1989 and 1986 5.0L EFI trucks have a dual function reservoir mounted on the frame rail that acts like a selector valve. The Carbonated trucks 1985 and earlier 5.0L and 1987 and below 4.9L, 5.8L and 7.5L have a 6-way mechanical valve. The switch on your dash selects which fuel pump will be energized.
This question comes a few years late but I'm of a similar position. However I was curious how exactly the switch selects either tank. I noticed I have a fuse for a tank selector but the back tank does not work regardless of fuse in or fuse out. Keeping in mind, I'm not asking how to fix my back tank, that's under control - funds allowing, I'd just like to know about this mystery fuse.

The fuse holder position is for the motorized electric fuel pump selector valve/gauge.
You may not have a motorized electric fuel pump selector valve/gauge or it may be frozen in the front tank position.
The resevervoir mentioned is a vapor seperator but if it has 6 lines 2 fuel,2 return inlelts and 1 fuel. 1 return outlet it is a pressure switch valve with a diaphram on top used to channel return to correct tank and close off the tank not selected, this was activated by whichever primary pump in tank was selected by switch on dash directly. In my diag I would try to verify if one or both pumps in tanks operate when selected. If not why , inop pump in tank or both no electrical to either possible bad switch.

Profile sez 1986: 1985/86 F150/350's have one or the other of the following:
E5TZ9189A .. Fuel Tank Selector Valve-3 Ports / Marked: E57B-9F271-AA.
or...
E5TZ9189B .. Fuel Tank Selector Valve-6 Ports / Marked: E57B-9F271-BA or E67B-9F271-AA.
Both these parts are known to fail without notice, and both are still available from Ford.
Normally I'd list the MSRP & the FTE member net prices, but FTEpartsguy.com's website is down for maintainance.

NumberDummy,
Is either one of these Fuel Tank Selector Valves mentioned the motorized electric fuel pump selector valve/gauge or just the 3-Port solenoid and the the pressure activated 6-Port valve?

The 6 port is just a plain old plastic valve, what the 3 port is...I can't tell, cuz the illustration on the microfiche slide is badly scratched and cloudy.
There's also the following used on one 1986 (302 w/dual tanks), and 87's and later: 9B263 reservoir & fuel tank selector valve.
The 6 ported variety has been a "best seller" for Ford since 1985.
I sold so many of those 6 port valves, I know the p/n by heart.
The motorized electric fuel pump selector valve/gauge was not used on the 302 or 351 in 86-87 that the fuse position in question was used for. It was just used on the 460 and Diesel trucks but maybe a different part on the Diesel trucks.

Here is the 6 port selector valve application. I sold tons of these valves, and mostly for gas engines.

Hi guys, thanks for sharing your mechanical knowledge and expertise, it has helped people like me immensely.I have a 88 F-250 5.8 and after reading, I took your advise and removed the fuel selector valve, and low pressure fuel pump that wasn't working.
I connected to the high pressure fuel pump, drawing fuel from the midship .The truck has been sitting for at least four years without starting.I just finished reconnecting everything late last night and will attempt to start it today.
My truck no longer has the extra fuel tank, but the trucks in great shape with 80,000 miles on it. After reading about this trucks fuel system,it appears to be problematic anyway,so I wont miss the xtra tank.
