Fuel Filter Replacement-Need Help

I have a 1994 Ford Van with the 351 engine. I am replacing the fuel filter that is under the car on the passenger side rail. The retaining clips can be easily removed with a screwdriver. Then when I try to pull the metal hoes off the filter they don't seem to want to come off. Should I just apply more force. The hoes ends are enclosed in a metal case, don't see any device to release.

You need the tool to remove them. Go to NAPA and get the metal ones (~$25 USD). You insert the end of the tool into the fuel line and it'll pop off.

ed2hess,

I like the K D fuel line tool, like the second one on this page. NAPA carries this style as well as a plastic set that look different and don't work as well.

http://www.mytoolstore.com/kd/kdengi04.html#3408

The diagram by it gives you an idea of how it is used.

You need to releive the fuel pressure first, then loosen the band clamp around the filter, then insert the lips of the tool around the nipple on one end of the filter and slide it down into the coupling on the end of the hose. There are four barbs inside the coupling that engage the nipple of the filter. (Look at the new filter for reference and note how the tool fits around it) Once the tool is engaged fully into the hose coupling, pull the hose off of the filter. This can require a little bit of force, but not a lot. Be prepared for some fuel to drain out of the tank end of the line untill the new filter is fully installed. Also notice the flow direction marked by an arrow on the filter. It should fit only one way into the bracket that the band clamp secures it to. Put the original safety clips back on it, not the plastic ones that come with the filter.

Thanks for the detail- I got the cheap $10 plastic set from NAPA and it worked exactly like you said. The filter is replaced now to see if that corrects my hesitation problem, if not on to more easter egging.

Good deal Ed,

I have both styles of the tool. The plastic ones will work sometime and sometimes not, on the same fitting. I got tired of fooling with them and bought the style that I linked for you. It always works.
