i resently bought a 1970 f250 camper special
it has a 390 2bl carb 4spd tranny dana 60 rear end
and 70,000 original miles on the motor
my goal is to make it go 140mph in keeping up with a friends
progress on his 76' what can i do? i need tips, cost on this
should be resonable i make good money but don't have money trees
in my back yard. any ideas?
140 MPH in an old pickup truck is a bad idea. I think you'd have to get well over 500 HP just to overcome the bad aerodynamics. I wouldn't want to be in there with you.
Think: Second Generation Lightning. that's about the only truck I'd consider to be in at that speed.
ha gotta have some fun some how!
my buds 76' has a a rating of 400hp and does 143.4mph
and i was in the truck with him when we hit that
thats the kidda rush i like!
If you're going that fast, the only advice I have is: rebuild everything. Make sure all your bearings and u joints and brakes and everything that spins or turns or rotates is in perfect order. We don't want to be cleaning you on the road with a pressure washer. That said, I think it's a awesome idea. Dangerous, sure but it's a great goal. I think you would want to keep it as low as possible to cut down on drag. Also, I think a big block would be the only way to go on something this heavy with this much drag, to work against the wind resistance. Something like a 429. Plenty of torque, but it can still turn up fast. I really dont' know about what kind of transmission you'd need. One other thing is, I think a tapered canopy that would run from the back of the cab straight down to the tailgate to help the air flow. Also, don't go cheapo on tires, but I guess THAT goes w/o saying. Well good luck your project, if I can help let me know!
143 in a 76 huh, What have you been smoking or think the rest of us have been smoking? Next thing you will say the the cops clocked you, right??

In the cool still quiet of night, you can hear chevies rusting away.
yes 143mph at an abaondoed airport 30 miles south from where i live
and the the cops did not clock us his father did with an after market rader gun made by cobera and it was in a 1976 ford f150
1/2 ton short box pickup it runs a 390 bored .30 over, high pro
cam and pistons, holly street avenger 770 double pumper and has been
rated at 400hp with shorty headers! so when your out smoking what ever, guys like us go the distance guys like you only dream of!
P.S my project is no joke!@
I had my '70 f-250 4x4 clocked at 157km/h (90mph+/-) by the police while we were responding to a mutual aid fire call in the next town. I had 4 other firefighters aboard (three in the back )plus a couple hundred pounds of equipment.
Thats was fast enough!!
I've gone over 150 mph in my ride...and I'm not talking about my '71 F250. If you look below my name, you'll see that one of my other vehicles is a '96 Cobra. I can reach that speed in under 25 seconds. The thrill is not how fast you can go, it's how fast you can get to that top speed. If you want to go fast, just buy a vehicle that was MADE to go fast. I drove the truck today on the interstate and going 80 in it made me nervous. The only reason I was going 80 was that a cop passed me doing 80 and it was either speed up or get run over by the 40 cars following the cop closely on the interstate. When I go 80 mph in the Cobra, it's no big deal at all. Even trucks that are lowered, tubbed out, blown, and made to be hot rods aren't made for top speed. They are meant for the occasional 1/4 mile blast that might take them to 120 mph TOPS. I can't think of any truck I would like to be in at 145 mph.
What rear end ratio is in the truck. I have a 40 over 390 still on the stand, maybe there is hope.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 23-Sep-02 AT 12:20 PM (EST)]The fastest I've ever been in a pickup was 110 mph -- that was years ago in my '84 S10 4x4 with the 2.8 V6, and that was more than fast enough.
I get uncomfortable in my '72 Camper Special around 85 mph -- even with the new poly bushings, new shocks, and sway bar.
HOWEVER... The Land Speed record for a Ranger pickup is 202.434 mph.
The fastest diesel truck is 263.487 mph.

Here's a picture of that Ranger:

(There they claim 205.208 mph)
Good luck and beeeee careful!

Good Luck, but that one guy is right, buy a mustang if you want to go fast. Its to dangerous in an old ford truck. I've had my f 100 up to 100, it isn't as fun as going 100 in my Focus, and it was scarier than almost anything i've ever done partly because it feels like you have no control. . I've had my focus to 135mph and it wasnt anymore fun than 100mph. I recomend that insted of going super fast you accelerate. Beat your friend at that. Its always funner to win in the 1/4 mile than in top speed anyways.
That's what I love about this forum and living in America as well.
When I read your post, like a lot of guys, I thought you were nuts. After reading all the subsequent posts, I'm thinking, hey not so crazy after all if that's what you want to do. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to be in the cab with you, but I say, more power to ya. And some of the posts have really good advice about getting your truck ready...so you're not alone with your idea.
Good luck, hope you make it!

BTW you gonna part it out afterwards??? (Just kidding)
