140mph what can do

well guys thx for all the warnings but i've been in sports car and muscle cars that could shake the dead out of the ground with thier
speed and proformance, but a couple years ago me and my friend swore
we where gonna build the craziest high pro pickups around!
he got his up and runnin and now its my turn!
there nothing in the world like the sound, feeling of an old FORD blasting down the interstate with room in the back for the hay!

140mph what can do

4.10 and a 4 gear are not high enough to reach that
kinda speed with a BB. harden the suspension!!!!!trust
me. Ive buried the speedo in my old hog,and MAN O MAN
what a rush, I'd compare it to re entering the earths
atmosphere at the wrong angle! 4 foot dual straight pipes
jes friggin blowing black smoke with noise that would raise
the dead.... but then I hit some moderate hills and
I realized 3/4 camper special suspension ain't even
doing any thing to stabilize, weird feeling, kinda
like flyng in turbulence.

Good luck!

I find it much more of a rush doing 100mph in
a 30 year old pick-up, than doing 130 or so in a car.

For the gears, 3.23's could probaly do the job.
Manual steering is more accurate than power.
Harden suspension.
As for power, your buddy did it with 400 in a 76 that
is probaly heavier than a 70 and less aerodynamic.

Betcha them chebers would never attempt this!! unless...
never mind, it jes wouldn't happen in a cheb.

140mph what can do

I found pulling a 16 second 1/4 mile out of
my 250 camper special w/390 2v in need of rebuild,
4 gear, and 4.10, was a better accomplishment than
seeing how long I could hold my foot to the floor
on a straight stretch.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-Sep-02 AT 00:30 AM (EST)]Granted, it sounds pretty silly, but whatever. All you need is a well adjusted suspension, a 400hp+ motor, and @ 2.25 rear gears. It will take you a while, but with a stiff tail wind you may make it. Remember there is a different between quick and fast. My pro-stock Cougar is quick as hell, but a stock eclipse is faster. Meaning? I can roast the tires through third and do a 11 second quarter mile, but its gears run out at 130mph. Plenty of stock cars can 'eventually' reach a higher top speed than that. I wouldn't even bother trying to make a 140mph truck, but to each their own.

I have a 427 stroker in my 66 Ranger with a 2.75 rear end and 4 speed. It will roll right on down the road. I think you are nuts for trying to go that fast in a pickup. Mine is still pulling hard at a gps measured 120 but it is really getting loose at that speed. I know its just 20 more mph but it's gonna take a lot of horsepower to get it. I hope you have speed rated tires and are not on the same road as me when you are doing those speeds. Notice that I didn't say you couldn't, I just don't think it is too responsible. Be careful.

Figure out a way to reduce the drag. The amount of power lost to drag at those speeds is incredible. I did a problem concerning a light bar on top of a police cruiser at 70 MPH and it was around 50hp lost. Its not a direct relationship to speed, ie the speed is a multiplier. I will have to look it up when I get home. The front of these trucks are too big and flat. Also your lift coeficient, I agree with the other post lower it. Maybe look into the styling they use at the salt flats for high speed runs, you would be suprised how much difference a little air will make.:-X23

Count me as a skeptic, which is a nice way of saying that I simply don't believe you. A naturally aspirated 390 and 4.10 gears and he did 143 mph in a pickup? Sounds like he did a little math and figured out that 143 mph would be his speed at a 7,000 rpm redline.

That, of course, assumes that his top speed is redline limited. In reality, drag would be the limiting factor. At 143 mph, 366 horsepower is needed just to overcome air resistance (I assumed a very conservative 0.5 cd and 35 sq ft of frontal area). Think that 400 horsepower motor is enough? Think again. You also need to overcome friction and losses in the driveline, rolling resistance of the tires, etc. 40%-50% of your power is easily lost in those areas, even in a well built race car with a performance drivetrain. So instead of 366 horsepower, you need at least 610-730 horsepower. Can you get 600-700 horsepower out of a .030 over carbureted 390? Not bloody likely without a lot of money, a lot of time and an engine dyno for testing.

Even if you could, it would take a LONG time to get up to that speed, and it would have to be an awful long runway to get there and still have enough room to stop afterward. Besides, as others have pointed out, it would be ridiculously unsafe to go that fast in a F-series without a host of major and expensive mods.

Whats the matter with you guys? I think its an awesome idea! My STOCK 1970 F100 with a 2v 302 and a three speed manual can hit 80mph! (thats not counting the extra 5 miles an hour i get out of taller tires) Thes e trucks are way more reliable than most people give them credit for, but they have been on the street for a long time I would make sure everything that goes round is in top notch shape, its not hard to do with these simple machines. Good luck post a pic when you get done I gotta see this!

c'mon guys I have a 1970 F100 with a 2v 302 and a manual 3 speed and I can hit 85mph. That engine is only rated at 210 hp with a 308 rearend. I think this guy can do it with a 390 and some decent gears. besides how many guys try 140mph if they don't already have some idea of the danger involved. Any idiot can hop in a hot new car fresh from the dealer and hit some outrageous speeds but I think if he's gonna build the truck himself he's already figured out its gonna take some work and precautions. anyways thats my 2cents worth Good luck to you!

You will have some new bragging rights for sure!
These trucks are definitly
rippers compared to anything else I'v driven pick-up
wise, and mine hit 100+ and I will list a few problems
it has,tapping lifters,2 burnt valves,compression loss about
20% or so, a dripping 2v,slightly worn wheel bearings,
20w-50 motor oil with thickener. The trucks got
a granny 4gear and 4.10's. the engine is a ratted out
390. I think 140 is possible. I remember quite clearly
watching that needle bottom out while I was still accelarating,
then looking around in a daze at the roadside thinking woh Man!
then I hit a heave in the road and that brought me
back to reality.

My dad always said any car can do 120 mph if you take it in the air high enough and drop it

I don't think that it would be my idea of fun to do 140mph in a concrete cinder block with wheels.:-X23
