99 Explorer rear shock replacement
How tough is it to the unbolt the top of the rear shocks? I'm planning on replacing the shocks and it looks like a real tight fit. Any tips on how to remove these nuts?

its really not that hard and basic wrenches are all that's required. remove the spare tire to give yourself plenty of working room. If you have a lot of rust, you might have to soak them with a penetrant.

it was a s.o.a.b. on my 97... the rear bolts on top would just not come off!!! of course i had a ton of rust because it lived most of its life in indiana... that stupid cover on the rear left shock makes things so hard. definitely remove the spare tire......

I changed all four shocks on my 97 a couple of years ago. The best advice would be to have the propper fitting wrench to take the bolts off. Once your back there don't be affraid to puts some muscle to get the bolt off..depending on how much rust is on, you may need to use the wrench/hammer combo to get it off. Once you get the bolt truning the you should be all set (oil my be helpful too). As mentioned by the others, take off the spare tire and make sure the rear of the truck is up high enough so you can work freely. The install is the same only in reverse. Good luck!
