01 fuel filter question

Ive tried to do a search on this topic and dont get the specific answer i'm looking for, so Im hoping someone can answer it for me.

I have a 2001 Explorer sport trac and it uses a 3 pronged fuel filter 2 in back and 1 on top. (FG-1039) Ive alway had the oil change people replace my fuel filters in the past, but Im not too confident in thier abilitites.

My question is this: Since there are 2 lines going in to the back of the filter does it matter which line goes into which port?? are they interchangeable or are the fittings a different size so you cant goof it up?

Ive read how hard these are to take off (with the tool) so I'd like to get all the info before I try it out.

Thanks again

Timothy

I have two Gen1 Explorers so there may be differences. The filter on my trucks are located on the frame rail near the front of the vehicle (about the drivers door). It has one line in and one line out. The filter has a directional arrow on it. It requires the special tool to remove the filter. Ford has two types of push connect fittings both require a special tool. One is called hair-pin type the other duck-bill type. I believe hair-pin are 3/8 and 5/16 line and duck-bill are on the 1/4 lines.

Regardless... check your system, label the lines, label the fittings (digital photographs are helpfull), compare the new filter to the old filter (before removing any lines) and when you are sure you have everything matched up and labelled properly make the change.

thanks,

Mine definately has two lines coming in from the tank and one going out to the engine. Ive seen the garage guys switching it out, and im not sure if they remembered to label the lines....if they cant be switched, is there any sign that they lines were switched???

THanks

Tim

I see what you are saying now. You're think the garage guys may have messed it up and are concerned whether it's correct the way it is now. I don't have enough specific information to help you. The Haynes manual is not specific either.

Maybe other FTE members can help.

Sorry.
