Polk MOMOs

Alrighty, I'm tired of my Alpine Type-R components. The tweeters distort far too quickly and the bass isn't all that great. Btw, those things are not worth the MSRP of $300 a set. I want the Polk MOMOs. They are great from what I've heard, just I would like to get some opinions from real guys. These would be 5x7s to go in my front doors. Another reason my Type-Rs would be distorting is bc I have 40 watts RMS on them. But still, spending that much money on them should've yielded better results (I paid half the MSRP for my 2 pairs). Shame on Alpine. Shame on Alpine.

Hmm... a whole 40 watts!

Your problem is more likely the cause of not having enough power. The Alpine TypeR components are excellent products. They generally perform best with about 75 to 100 watts RMS per cahnnel being supplied to them. The Polk MOMO's are pretty good, but if you think that your Alpine's sound bad, just wait until the tweeter protection circuitry kicks in on the MOMO's. With as little power as you are going to be supplying them the amplifier will be playing to it's limits especially at highway speeds.

Now this is where the Polk tweeters will more than likely cut out when the protection circuitry begins to limit the signal due to increased thermal energy being issued from the distorting amplifier. If i were you i'd seriously reconsider dumping my TypeR's and invest in a larger amplifier.

Considering a factory HU sends only 18 watts RMS on average, my amp is putting out twice that. The MOMOs are rated at more RMS that the Type-Rs. I'm not your average stereo guy... Look at my signature. This is a single cab ranger, can't fit much bigger of an amp in there.

The fact remains that you are underpowering the components that you already have. And trading them out for a set of components with a higher rating and a crossover network that doesn't tolerate distortion well is not going to benefit you in the least.

What your statements suggests is similar to saying that your Ranger can't get past a 20 second quarter mile time, but you feel that if you took your motor and put it into a F-150 Lightning chassis you times would improve.

Everything revolves around the power, without it your performance suffers.

Later,
Mike

Another fact is, it's likely the amp that is putting out the distortion. You don't mention what you are powering those speakers with but the majority (not all) will start putting out distortion at higher levels. You'd probably be better off getting a higher powered amp, like 100W/channel, then you're ears will start to hurt before the amp is anywhere near the clipping/distortion.

Almost forgot; use this link: http://www.350z-tech.com/zwiki/Tutor...plifier_Tuning to tune your stereo system up, turning down the gain/s on your 4 channel amp may cut out some of the distortion. It's worked for me.

It's the Alpine MFP-240 if I remember the model number correctly. Basically it's nominal ratings are as follow:

100x2 @ 4ohms
4X40 @ 4ohms
4x50 @ 2ohms

I will have to try those tuning tracks.

Something else you could do is bridge the two fronts so you're getting 100W to each and see what it sounds like. But do this after you tune the system, as it's likely your gains are set too high, causing the clipping.

Haha, guess I should have read your whole post....

Those Alpine R's are power hungry little buggers. I have a set of 5.25 Alpine R components in my Jeep, and they were previously run off the deck...they sounded like poo...now they are at 200w each, and sound great (mind you, their is a lot of tuning involved to overpower them without killing them).

In my dd I have CDT components, rated at 150w RMS being powered at 400w RMS, and they sound like angels singing on my dashboard .

Keep the R's, bridge your amp, and tune them as it says above, and I'm sure you'll be glad you kept them.

Lol, I just want great sound. If that gives me great sound, then that'd be wonderful. I wouldn't ask for more. It's not that they sound bad, just I was expecting more out of them.... :P
