I’ve got a 2003 Ranger (3.0 FFV) 2WD. It’s got 67000 miles on it (bought it brand new). I have always run unleaded 87 gas in it. But now I’m thinking of running E85 in it mainly due to the 40 cents per gallon difference (I drive 30 miles to work every day)
I know you can mix gas & E85 as need be but since I’ve run so many miles on unleaded I’m worried that if I switch to E85 at this point in the game I may do some damage to my truck. I’m not vehicle savvy (satellite TV is my game) so I’m hesitant about changing if it will damage the truck. There are 2 E-85 stations near me so (less than a mile away)..
Has anyone tried switching to E-85 after putting a lot of miles on the engine and did it hurt the engine (or maybe help it)?
I can't see why you can't run E85 in it IF the truck is FFV equipped. From what I understand, it can run on any combination of gasoline/ethanol mix up to 85% ethanol/15% gasoline.
If I were in your shoes, I'd be running E85 all the time but that's just me. Good luck.
E85 fuel you loose up to 20% in mileage. I'm not saying you can't try it but, around here thats what happens. The money saved on the fuel is wasted in mileage drop. So here it's a wash.

Yes the truck is E85..its got the leaf on the back and the sticker on the gas flap that it can take both

E85 has a higher octane rating than regular gasoline. If anything, it'll be more resistant to spark knock, which isn't a bad thing with that 3.0L engine!
You will do the truck some good. It will clean out any gunk in the fuel system, although you should not have any as MN has 10% ethanol in all grades of gas and will be switching to 20% in 2 years.
One thing I have been told though is to run either all e85 or all regular gas, they say if you switch back and forth each tank that the computer takes about 100 mile to readjust and you could experience drivability problems.
I say start filling up with e85 and after a few tanks you may notice a performance gain and smoother running truck. MPG will drop though as the engine is optimized for regular gas. A guy by the name of White lightning hangs out in the alt. fuel forum had a custom chip burned for his F150 that restored the lost MPG while running e85.
Check out the thread called pure alchohol.
