To verify which transmission it is, check the drivers door post for the trans code. According to my Chilton's manual, here's what the codes represent for 73-84 models.
C4=G
C5=W
C6=P (73-82) K (83-84)
AOD=T
FMX=J

I think the 78 truck has a over drive transmition, becuse has original crus contro.
What is the difference on a c6 and a FMX trans. other than the hydraulic pan.

C6 has a fixed bellhousing (1 piece bellhousing and case) and the FMX is 3 sections, bellhousing, case, and tailshaft.

Use the pan shape and bolts pattern to determine the model of transmission on your truck. http://www.bulkpart.com/fordid.html

G = C6 automatic transmission. Always check the bolt pattern and pan shape as discussed on previous post to make sure nothing was swapped prior to you buying the truck.

Here's another one

http://mil1ion.clubfte.com/FordRelat...trations3.html

G code actually just stands for Automatic (Ford coding) and is more than likely a C6 (real world)

I have a rebuild manual for Ford transmissions that has a section for C9 and C10 used in the heavy duty trucks. Here's a link http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/187...Fencoding=UTF8, I have a similar book.
