My 01 F250 is not disengaging the axle from the hub lock when the switch is turned back to 2wd. If I take the hub lock out and tap it on the ground and then re-install it, the axle is disengaged. So, it would seem that the lock out is bad but, how do I know that it is not a vacuum problem or something else that is not releasing the hub lock and by removing it, it goes back to 2wd. Ford wants $300 for one hub. I hate to lose my auto hubs if it is just replacing the hub but, didn't want to spend the money till I was sure. If anybody could help on this, I would appreciate it.
You indicated that you have the ESOF hubs. So, when in the "Auto" mode the hub is not releasing...then I recommend (with the ESOF switch on the dash in the 2HI position)...manually locking the hub into the "Lock" position. Then back to the "Auto" position. Doing that a few times might help release the hub.
When you remove the ESOF hub, is the hub area clean on the truck? Are you putting a fair amount of grease on the hub when you re-install?
It could be a vacuum leak, but if the ESOF hubs engage when put into 4HI or 4L, but not dis-engage...then I would suspect the hubs themselves.
Look on eBay...folks are selling all the time. You might find a set for $200 or less.
Good luck,
biz

Thanks for the info but, I did the turning them from auto to lock many times and the same thing happens. As far as grease, where should I be greasing them and should I be cleaning them first with something. They look clean and no signs of rust or water so, I wanted to know if I could clean them and try that or leave them alone and just buy new.
If you want to keep the ESOF capabilities, you can clean, lube, and reinstall them. Lube then inside on the working parts. If not then you can always get the manual hubs.
After you changed the wheel bearing hub assemblies, did they work? Or is this the first time you've tried them?
the hubs may be sticking and in need of a good cleaning and relubeing also for a esof hub to disengage the truck must be driven backwards about 25 to 30 feet tomake them unlock.
my 05 is my 5 th ford with esof and they have worked the same way. we have the hubs not shifter that move a spine on the axle shaft like like gm and the others so we are still forced to the old schoolway.
give it a try and come back to let us know .
This is the first time that I have tried them since changing the bearing assembly. What should I clean them with? Should I lube them with wheel bearing grease or a lithium type spray grease? I did try the backing up idea when this happened and that didn't help.
orn mine have been this way since day one, the case unloads but the hubs stay engaaged till i back up. taking the load off them all the esof i have purchased have been that way, i have to go out and check by reading my manual again to be sure but i think right now it says that in it.i will check and read it again.
