Lawn Mower question

Do you think a car voltage regulator will work on a lawn mower? In question is a Briggs and Stratton 11HP motor on a Toro riding mower.

if it's a 12 volt system, why not?

That's what I though. My mower toasted the previous regulator. I got a new one from Autozone (for a car) and now the mower starts, but drains the battery down in about 10 - 15 mins. Seems the charging system is not working. Some smart *** told me that I am terribly wrong by using the car voltage regulator. Should use one specifically for Briggs. I am thinking there is something else wrong. I don't even know where the charging system is on this darn thing.

The charging system should be under the flywheel. The windings of the stator mount directly under the flywheel. , The magnet for the ignition is the magnet for the ignition, this system is called a PMA or permanent magnet alternator, and yes you need the regulator specific for the Briggs and Stratton engine you are dealing with as the stator size is different that automotive alternators. Also there is no field current needed for a PMA.
For my 12 hp B&S I downloaded the Parts and Maintenance catalogs from Briggs and Stratton’s web site.
Also try northern tool for Briggs and Stratton parts, I have never found anything in their web site but call them and ask for the specific part or get a catalog

Isnt the Voltage regulator, just a transformer which gos in and out of circut as needed, and includes a diode as to not let power run back through the winding once the motor is shut off.
