I've done everything suggested and ruined my second set of ujoints and in process knocked off a balance weight spinning the shaft in a vise it hit side. Taking it to the shop and chalk this one up as a loosing experience. Maybe better luck in the future but this did n't go well at all for some reason.
Okay, my u-joint story didn't go well at all. I took it in to have new joints put in at $30 a pop (3/split axel) and $50 for balancing. Tech quoted me right at $150 for all. Owner later said my yoke shaft was pitted and I needed a new one, stating he wouldn't put it in his transmission. Anyway, I declined the $75 offer for a new one. Later he asked me if the tech gave me a quote, and said it'd be $50 more. He ended up giving me the orignal quoted price and the tech kindly polished the shaft, cleaning it up pretty well.
NAPA charged $12-14 per joint, and autozone was a buck or two less. I'm hoping to post soon a list of parts, differences and their prices, plus if anyone reads this I'd like to post-job critique my difficulties to suggest how someone can do this better than I was able to.
