I got nailed by a hail storm in Eastern Oregon. Ping pong+ sized hail pummled my truck; paint job chipped to metal, broke wind shield and dented radiator/tranny cooler. About 5% of the fins are bent over all the way, should I be concerned? I wouldn't think so, but I might add it to my claim and either replace or fix the fins.
My question is there a nifty way to straighten the fins out? If I replace it can I use one of the newer radiators with the improved tranny cooler (saw something on another thread about the differences between my 99 SD and the newer rigs)???
thanks, dc
Oh, this is a great excuse to buy a Billet Grill :-X23
You might want to check with the tool supply folks like Snap ON or Mac Tools and maybe even Napa and the other auto parts places about a fin straightner. I have seen them i'm just not sure who carries them Snap On i think. As for the second part of your question you might want to post that in the appropriate forum.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 10-Jul-02 AT 11:36 AM (EST)]Thanks, my brother told me of the fin combs too, I will give it a try. I guess it wasn't the radiator, it is the AC Condenser that rides right in front. Either way it blocks air flow the for Rad and AC coils.
Oh, and lucky me, my brother is a HVAC Program Manager/ designer, so refrigeration is his biz.....
Fin combs work great for most problems. Occasionally you will find a fin that is crushed down against a tube. I use a piece of 1/16" dia brass welding rod formed into a tiny hook with a bent handle to hold for pulling those fins out.
Fin combs can be purchased at many tool and hardware stores. I think I remember seeing them even at Home Depot in the "general" tools section.
Hey eric, what does a fin comb go for nowadays, if I was to pick it up at Home Depot? I hit a Pigeon last year on the highway, and drove him from Columbia, SC all the way to Marietta, GA. Kinda funny, I saw a wing sticking out of my grill, so I pulled the bird out, and he looked perfectly normal except for his head was turned around backwards, and he left a dent on the grillshell where his head hit. That, and everytime the radiator gets wet, I can STILL smell pigeon juice, even though I washed it with engine degreaser. Anyway, I was just looking forward to straitening out the 4-6 in^2 of mildly bent fins. Thanks always for the wisdom! -TK

I have had several thoughts along those lines, how about those poor souls in the South, Golf Ball size. I have heard people get killed in those storms. It is something I don't want to do again that's for sure, my ears rang for hours and it is still a bit unbelievable.
Oh, and the paint job, AC coil, and my window repair bill is a whopping $3,500!!
