I have always been lucky with hail. In past instances it has been my wife's car that took the hit.
With the aluminum roof, hood and fenders I have always remained a tad bit skeptical about how well the truck would hold up to hail. That said, while coming back from the Keys on 27 south of I75 (BFE) I got caught in a wicked hail storm with nowhere to seek shelter. I pulled up wx on my phone and the storm was more or less stationary but still slowly moving towards me so rather than a prolonged beating I decided to push ahead at 30 mph to try to get out of it. The beating lasted about 10 minutes which seemed like an eternity.
LOUD........sounded like half a dozen guys beating the truck with bats. I was sick to my stomach. I just knew the exterior was ruined. My wife gave me the look like "well this truck didn't last long". Finally got out of the hail and my wife says "aren't going to pull over and look"? "No" I said I don't want to look. Got across the state to Naples and pulled in to our usual spot to eat although I wasn't hungry.
Got out and darn if the there wasn't a dent or a mark anywhere on the truck.......nothing. My appetite returned.
FWIW not sure about the size of the hail but it felt like the windshield was about about to bust in and visibility no more than 30-40 ft or so..... scary in big truck, can't imagine taking that in a passenger car.
We were told at work (kcap F-150 plant) that these new aluminum bodies would be more resistant to door dings and hail damage due to the aluminum being thicker than the steel previously used. Not sure if it's true, but I'm happy to hear you withstood the beating!!!
I will vouch for the fact that they do not hold up any better or worse than steel. Here was mine about a month ago. These pics are all of the hood which was replaced. A-pillars and roof were able to be fixed via PDR. My 100% aluminum AgriCover LOMAX faired 100 times better than the truck did. It took one tiny dent and that was it. Still lovin the LOMAX.
