What is the accual redline on an 04 f150 heritage with a 4.2? I know the peak power is between 3500 and 4000 rpms but without a stock tach im not sure. i have look on different websites and havent found what i was looking for. anyone know?
Thanks. i havent had the rpms up that high because i wasnt surewhat the redline was. i havent been passed 5000 yet.
but heres another question ive been wondering about. how much of a performance gain and fuel milage gain would i get from hollowing out the cats? i know id have to get MIL eliminators but those are cheap and easy.
ive also recently hooked up an aftermarket tach in my 04 and every once in awhile the truck seems to miss out or back fire thru the intake while im drving. its hard to tell bc it just does it once and runs perfectly fine. ive checked the plugs and regapped them and that doesnt seem to help. any ideas? im got a autometer autogage 5" tach hooked up thru a ford racing tach driver.
I'd hate to get the rpms that high, the truck was loud when I got it up to 3500 rpm, boy, it would sound like a chainsaw at 5000 rpm......and get a quart of oil out.
I don't know how much - if any - you'd gain by hollowing out the cats on a stock 4.2.
My guess is, it would not be a magic pill to unleash tons of power.
I wouldn't mess with it myself. I'd look elsewhere for basic, cost effective means of "tinkering".
That is not true for my truck. ive had it up to 5400 looking for that rev limiter and was not lucky so far. i have my shift light set at aprox 4600 as of right now to be on the safe side. what year truck were u talking about with the 5,150 rpm limiter?
And as for the cats on my truck i think i might do it to see what happens anyway. ive already added a 40 series flowmaster SI/Do and made it exit out the side like the lightning. im sure it will breathe a little better and a cold air will come into play soon.
Why in the world would you want to run your trucks at redline, it certainly will decrease their lifespans and really suck the gas down...........and you will need ear plugs.
So the 4.2's do have a rev-limiter? Good because I pulled out in front of someone the other day and I got up to about 35 in first gear. The thing was loud!

Why do i want the redline? So I know what the rpm range is on my truck. I want to be able to have full power when i need it. As for the flowmasters, they sound pretty good. Well, as good as u can get for a v6. Its has a low tone as highway speeds and you can drive long trips and not have to deal with the exhaust over the radio. Some say it can sound a bit ricy but i really dont think so. What can you really expect for a v6.
You can have the full power any time you want it because the truck has a governer that will prevent going over the redline. I would like to know the redline just out of curiosity and I'd like to see on paper the power curve of the 4.2 V-6. I agree with others, its a good engine that has a pretty even power curve.
The redline in my truck is at 5500 rpms. Ive heard there are varitions on some years but im not sure. I too would line to see the power curve on paper to see what it can do.
