Ford390, that is certainly one way to find out. The computer will limit the amount of RPMs in park.

Actaully no, the engine won't limit rpms in park thats a GM thing. The redline is set to 5250 and it will reach that just fine in park.

on most 2001+ rangers, the rpm is restricted to 3000 in park on a automatic

the reason i ask is cuz my motor is estimated 300hp at 5000. my truck is a 07 hd xl with the 5.4 and it tachs out at 4800. i was wondering if any one out there with a xlt lariat or other has ever steped on it and seen where it top outs at. and if i were to get a programer and raise the rev limiter what is the safe spot to stop at and to change the shift points. flooring it doesnt help me out since it wont go any higher than 4800 rpm.

If you could change it. I don't think a programmer can , then I wouldn't go any higher than 5k rpm on the 5.4. The 5.4 has a very long stroke. I thought the limiter was 5250 rpm on all the trucks. My 4.2 only goes that high on burnouts, but I usually shift by then .

There are both neutral/park and drive limiters on the 5.4. Both can be changed by a programmer (if the programmer supports it, SCT does). Under normal driving conditions you can't hit the limiter because the shift point is commanded at 4800. The engine, even with over-drive off, does not have enough power to get it to the rev limiter (well in excess of 120 mph).

The only way to get it to the limiter is in drive 2. A more optimal shift point is a couple hundred RPM higher but it can make mileage suffer if you WOT the truck often.

Ken if there are park and neutral rev limiters then why does my 06 go all the way to 5200 rpm on the tach in both of those settings? My 05 is the same way and with both trucks I can get them to shift at redline by flooring it while merging onto the freeway. Both trucks are bone stock so im just curious.

The 3 valve 5.4 has several limiters (these aren't all of them but these apply to this thread):

Regular limiter: 5250
Neutral Limiter: 5250
Throttle based speed limiter: 99
Throttle based engine speed limiter: 5175

All of these can be changed independently of each other.

Depending on the PCM code the shift point is going to vary some but here are rough WOT shift numbers for a 5.4:

1-2 : 4800-4975
2-3 : 4800-4975
3-4 : 4400

These are the commanded shift points for the transmission. Its the point where the shift begins to happen. Now, depending on how fast the engine is accelerating, the shift point can complete at a much higher point. For example, if the engine is accelerating at 500 RPM per second and it takes 1 second to shift, the 3-4 shift is going to happen at 4900 RPM.

A limiter is not the same as redline.
