The standard was 360/390 but that came to an end in 76, I'm guessing the 400M was the replacement.

The 460 never came from the factory in a 4x4 until the 80's

While the had the 360/390 was stock, the 360 was the block most commonly found in them.

360-390 was engine used in 1973-1976, 1977 hi-boy used 351-400m I know this cause my 77 has 400m and I am sure this is the original engine.

FE stopped production in 1976, if they had leftovers to install into the rest of the 76 body style I can see that, but go to the parts store and try to buy a part for a 77 390 and watch the NAPA parts boy get confused. I dont think they installed any from the factory into the 77 body style.

Some f350s had FEs in them in 1979, I think ford put in whatever they had laying around, especially in the 350's, where the bigger trucks did not need converters as soon as everyone else. When dealing with the poor kid at NAPA, just tell him your truck is a 76, life will be easier that way. DF
