The 69 restoration project continues. I just got my new weatherstripping and have a couple of questions:
1. I am having difficulty getting the old gasket out of my vent windows. The straight section of the existing gasket (back edge of the vent frame) does not seem to want to come out. Any tricks I am missing?
2. Does the rope trick really work for installing windshield gaskets? It looks plausible but I have never done it. Any tips?
3. What type of sealant should I use around the windshield?
i am in the process of doing that myself. the flat peice is rivited on and needs to be drilled out. we are going to drill them all the way through and re-rivit them then put the channel in to cover up the pop rivits. we talked to the guy who installed the front and rear windows on the truck and he said that is the way he has done it in the past. if you got any more questions ask and i will try to help.
Steve, as far as the rope trick goes; Yes, it does work. It works better, however, if you can have another person pushing in on the outside of the glass while you pull in the rope. Otherwise, the lip on the gasket may pop out on you halfway through. (I did auto glass for quite a few years) Good luck!
Steve as Bill posted the rope does work. I had one installed at my friendly glass dealer and they used a 1/4" rope one guy inside pulling the rope and one out pushing, and installed it dry (no sealants).
