On my 02 I have an oil leak that only seems to leak when its its running and for a short time after. I put oil dye in and put it on the lift. There is a trail down the back side of the motor on the pass. side. Its hard to tell where its coming from. Also just behind the HPOP there is a puddle of oil and you can see where the has been oil just under the line on the hpop. I am new to Diesel and I am having a hard time tracing these leaks. Is it possible that the oil is running from the pump and then down to the back on the engine or am I looking at 2 diff leaks. Thanks for any help.
HPOP oil lines are known to leak ... turbo pedestal o rings are known to leak ... plugs on back of heads are known to leak. Sounds like you have the HPOP lines leaking and the oil is running back. That's where I'd start, by washing first and checking with the dye that you said you put in.
could be the EBPV on the turbo leaking too if you dont have a big puddle in the engine valley it could be the upper or lower turbo pedastal o-rings or EBPV
Also look on the HPOP itself. Below the fuel bowl is a large plug (18mm I believe it was) on the back of the HPOP. I think the plug is there to drain oil from the HPOP. Those can back out also. I had an oil leak that I tried to find for almost a month. Turned out to be that plug. By the time I figured out that was what was leaking, it had backed out so much that I could turn it with my fingers.
