Flashing Overdrive light

Yesterday I noticed that my overdrive light on my shifting lever was flashing and my truck was shifting hard and the overdrive was off.

I pulled over and turned the truck off and the problem cleared.

It happened twice. Any ideas?

Check the bottom half of this thread:

When my VSS was bad I had ABS lit, erratic speedo below 50 MPH, flashing OD, erratic auto trans. at slow speeds and cruise control malfunction. $21.67 and a new VSS later they all went away.

Hopefully its the vss. You might still need to get the codes pulled.

Jeem, Next time it happens get it to a shop and have it scanned it's setting a code and going to failsafe. If it stops after re-start then happens again after driving the puter is pickin up the problem again. even if the od lockout lite is not currently on a code should be stored to tell you what the problem is or at least where to look.... hope its only a sensor....Good luck.....Bill.

Thanks for all of the input

Thanks, people!!!!!!! Could some post a picture for where the VSS is? I am not very good when it comes to truck repairs, but if I had a picture I might try and tackle it myself.

My 2002 just started doing the same thing today. Ugh. So I am in it with ya. On the other thread referenced above, someone suggested cleaning the contacts on the VSS. I think I will try that first.

I just had mine scanned..... is is the MLP sensor it is not telling the comp. what gear I have selected. It was picking up park, reverse, and drive 1. so i am going to check the electrical contacts, try it and if that does not work buy a new sensor

My problem ended up being a bad servo pack in the transmission... $500 fix. Ouch.

Gentlemen, when the od flashes and it shifts hard it is going into protection mode. We are currently working on mine in the tranny shop. First process of elemination was a servo, now were trying to track down an electrical issue. The fact that it is flashing is telling you that it is preventing further damage. Let it shift hard until you can get into the shop. Troy
