Overdrive OFF Light Flashing
Overdrive OFF Light Flashing
(92, 302, Auto) I've noticed that when I disable the Overdrive by pushing the bypass button on the PRND lever, the overdrive "OFF" light begins flashing eratically. The overdrive bypass seems to work okay, but the light worries me so I don't use it now. The only problem is that the overdrive kicks in at around 40 MPH (which happens alot with city driving) so it's shifting ALOT - and HARD.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why this light would be flashing?

Had that happen once with the airbag light on a '91 taurus. Turned out the compter was flashing me the code for some burned out sensor. Maybe something similar is happening with you??

UPDATE: This turned out to be a signal of a major problem. Shortly thereafter, it started shifting very hard and sometimes the clutch would get stuck between gears and the engive would just rev.
I took it in to a trusted mechanic to check the tranny, and it turned out the just about everything I'd heard about the E40D tranny's was true - they die at about 90K miles. All of the "soft parts" inside had gotten hard and shrank. This increased the clearances between all of the parts. The pump was also leaking and the hard shifting had caused some damage - there was quite alot of metal shavings in the bottom of the pan.
Well anyway, I had him rebuild it to the tune of around $2,000. While he was at it, I had him add a tranny cooler - which hopefully will make THIS one last longer.
So now it shifts as smooth as a Cadillac...and the OD light doesn't flash any more.
The lesson here, boys and girls, is that if the light starts flashing, DON'T assume that it's just a bad connection on the light bulb. TAKE IT TO A MECHANIC ASAP!
