concrete

Poured the new floor in the "doghouse" a while back and the cement got away on me and the surface is much rougher than I would like. Can a Person make a topping mix with cement, sand, bonding agent and water? Don't want to go with epoxies as I don't have the time it takes for them to set up. I know you can buy a leveling compound but that is fairly pricy and I have the cement and sand etc. Harold

Are you talking about making a grout ?

I would recommend that you don't.it will just carck and look worse.

What vehicles are you expecting to put on it?
You can put a minimum 2 1/2" topping of concrete 3/8" aggregate
instead.
Or, some companies out there have equipment to grind down a slab to make it better looking.

I feel bad for you.
A Lot of people can lose a slab.
What happened with you ?
I hope you didn't spray water on it during the setting period to try and save it.

There is a discussion thread "Painting the Floor" about midway down second page in this forum that may have some interesting reading in it for you about floor treatments.

spraying concrete with water during the setting period will make it stronger. Concrete prefers a moist, humid enviroment to set up the best. It'll even cure underwater, at no less than 90% strength of dry air. I did a lab report on this last semster in concrete and asphalt cement lab.

When we (Civil and Enviromental Engineering Department, The Citadel) make our concrete canoe every year for the Carolina's Confrence, once the mix has been poured, we hose it down, and cover it with wet towels to increase the strength.

Dennis is right, you'll have to use no less than 3/8" aggregate, poured thin enough to cover what you need while still being smooth. You'll have to get a mold of some sort to get it very smooth, or you can polish it, but that's very difficult. Layers of concrete will tack to each other reasonably, especially in compression. Having only fine aggregate (sand) will hurt the shear strength tragically, as in it will surely crack under the lateral tension of a vehicle driving onto it. I have a few wicked recipies for Portland type III cement, lemme know if you're interested. TK
