Hey all I just recently acquired a 1990 F250, 7.3 IDI, regular cab long box with an E40D transmission in it. It shifts great when cool but as soon as it warms up, it shifts hard and at erratic times. I changed the trans oil and filter this weekend but that didn't seem to improve it any. My tach sensor and VSS seem to be working fine. I tested the tach sensor to make sure, and it shows 2300 ohms.I have not checked the VSS but the speedo seems to work fine and also don't know how to test it.
I don't have a scanner and so I just tried disconnecting the batteries to potentially clear the fault codes but that also didn't work.
Any suggestions on where to go from here? Any help from anyone would be appreciated.
Took my 91 F350 to a tranny shop last Friday and learned that you actually can't clear the "continues memory" codes by disconnecting the batteries. You could also have trouble codes and don't even know about it as not all codes set the OD trouble light on the dash. You will need a code scanner to to that. In some cases the OD trouble light can be made to go away by disconnecting the batteries.
I would suggest you either get your codes read by a good tranny shop or get a FORD OBDI code scanner. The plug-in for the scanner is located on the left fender, back side of the coolant overflow tank. There are two connectors that need to be attached to the code reader. Don't forget to turn off all your auxillaries (heater, AC, radio) and have the throttle fully depressed while the codes are being read.
I did pick up a code scanner recently, the only problem I have found is interpreting the codes can be a difficult thing and I will be back at my tranny shop to trace the root cause of the codes I am getting which thus far have not set the OD trouble light.

Can you get any OBDI Ford scanner or do you need to get a special one that will read diesel engine codes?
For some weird reason my FORD OBDI code reader I recently purchased covers all Ford models using OBDI except the 94' Diesel. Probably best to see a tranny shop.
Probably best to see a tranny shop and have your codes read if you got a 94' Diesel.
Ok well I reset the FIPL settings( they were a little off 1.08V- 3.9V roughly) and that didn't have any effect still shifts hard when up to running temp.
I then bought a scanner today and the only code I am getting is a hard code 26. According to the book the scanner came with it is a trans temp sensor fault.
I am a little confused by this. Where is the trans temp sensor on the E40D? Any further thoughts?
I believe the trans temp sensor on the E4OD is part of the circuit board on the back of the solenoid pack. I recently replaced my solenoid pack for about $CDN 500 (that about $US400)
I am not sure whether you can service the temp sensor separately.
I had my E4OD on my 94 7.3Lturbo IDI looked at by ford because it was hard shifting. 1st they changed the coil packs in the tranny. Theres a grand. then after about 8 or 9 months it started doing it again. Then they said it was a HIDDEN fuse under the dash...LOL yeah right...Then about 3 months it started again. Then it was Supposedly the PCM...There went another grand....Then 6 months later it happened again finally they found that a wire had been pushed back in the connector going to the PCM and had been smashed or crimped. once that was fixed I haven't had any problems....But that was only after I threatened to SUE them also...LOL
All codes on ford obdI and OBDII except hard faults (failed parts) will be gone after a battery disconnect of 10 min in fact the hard faults will be gone till the key is turned on and reset the code. Trust me on this.
