I am toying with the idea of replacing the 4spd,(3spd plus granny low) in my 73 F250 4x4; with a C6 from a 73 F250. Both my truck and the donor truck, which is a 2 wheel drive F250, have FE engines. Is this a direct swap or do I have to change the tail shaft on the C6? How about the shift linkage, kick down linkage, etc? I assume the steering columns are not a direct swap. Is there anything else I should know if I decide to do this? My truck also has a divorced transfer case.
I hope someone can offer a little insight, read pitfalls Thanks.
Hi, you have to change the tailshaft, and it is the last thing to come out of the case so you have to disassemble both transmissions and put the 4x4 shaft in the 2wheel drive trans then put it all back together then it bolts right in except you have to remove the pilot shaft bushing from your crank shaft.
John
Thanks for the info. Another question then does this mean that the tail shaft from the 4spd manual will fit the C6 auto?

Yes my truck has the divorced transfer case. So what does the driveshaft need, shortened I would think? I would go check but the truck is stored right now.

Im not sure of the differences, if any, between them. You should either find a doner truck with the c6/divorsed case and use that shaft, or have yours modified/new shaft built.
The FE trucks did not come with an auto in 4x4 with the seperate tranny transfer. What you need to do is install the auto trans and then measure with the drive shaft slip yoke installed from universal to universal and have a shaft made at a shop.
OK, I just rolled underneath the 1973 F250 4x4 out back. It has a 360, a C-6 and a divorced NP205. The tailshaft of the C-6 is shorter than a 2WD C-6. There is a half-round yoke bolted to the output shaft. This yoke uses U-bolts to attach the U-joint, just like most T-18's or NP435's. The tailhousing is unique also, as it has a provision to mount the transfer case shifter.
I think the driveshaft is the same length as a 4spd truck, but did not confirm.
This transmission in this truck is identical to the one I pulled from my 1976 F250 4WD (that one had a divorced NP203).
Pictures cost extra there's a snowstorm out there now.
Thanks guys. Especially to Art for crawling under those trucks
I was hoping that the 2wd C6 I have in the donor truck was the same as a 4wd C6. When I get the truck out of storage later this month I will do some measuring and figuring etc etc. Then decide if I will undertake the project. Could be fun....or a pain in the ...
