Mileage???

06 f150STX 4x4 super- Champions edition(horny!!) with a 4.6, 20"tires, 3.55 rear.
Sticker said 14-18, I'm getting 12? Jeez I've even been putting it in neutral and shutting off the engine going down big hills...Drive it real easy, a buddy with the same truck (not champions edition though, 3.73 rear) is getting 18? What gives? Any Ideas?
BTW my commuter-tiny Honda CRX- gets 37 mpg, boy this truck is cool, but monthly fuel is more than the payment!!!!!
Also I hear alot of whistling from the aircleaner element under acceleration. Is this normal?
Thanks,
Jay

sounds like 2 bad ideas. a lot of extra wear on the trans and constant restarting of the engine is not good and uses extra fuel.

Why does Ford still put the 4.6 for the F-150? I've got a 5.4L 3V SuperCrew and it gets 17-18mpg consistantly!
What advantage does a 4.6 give you? Less power for the same or worse gas mileage. I don't get it.

i got the 06 STX 4x4 Supercab with the 4.6 and am disappointed with the fuel mileage as well. I think if your driving a brand new truck around, especially in the hills or mountains, your mileage is going to be worse. I have already put almost 4,000 miles on mine and am seeing a slight improvement with the mileage, but those mountains take a toll on my mileage. I also added a tonnea cover which i hope will start helping mileage, and plan to get custom exhaust work done. i heard this weill help mileage too.

Smaller engine does not always mean better mileage. The 4.6 hase to work harder to pull the same weight. You can notice the trend over the past few years even with small 4 cylinder cars. The manufacturers have given the engines modest increases in size for more torque with the same or better mileage.

Driving Style

My '94 Crown Victoria with 4.6 gets around 17-19 MPG. My '05 FX4 SCREW with 5.4 gets 15-17 MPG. I have made some mods to truck: AEM Intake, Flowmaster catback duals, EDGE tuner. I've tried driving different to achieve greater MPG. I find I get the best mileage if I accelerate at a decent rate. Not a jack-rabbit start, but don't baby either. Get up to speed and cruise. Hope this helps.

I learned the same lesson with my '04 STX regular cab 4.6. If I drive like a little old lady I can squeek out 15 MPG. I agree with edillen. First thought would be a larger engine uses more gas. But it appears the 4.6 has to work so much harder to pull the weight it ends up using more fuel.

The gas mileage on the window sticker has always been a big fraud. There is a move underway to make it reflect reality.

The claimed mileage on my GM truck was dead on accurate at 14/18. Ford puts the exact same numbers on their sticker, but it's a dream I find. The GM also has more power. I put the car on the trailer this weekend and towed it a while as a shake down before the season starts...and the ford definitely strains more than the GM did. Mileage blows towing as well...was into single digits. The worst the GM ever got towing was 11.5.

Still, I do like the ford.

My '05 FX4 5.4L SCREW w/3.73 gears was getting consistant 13.8 City (stock) for the first 3000 miles. Now, after new intake, exhaust, and Edge tuner I am up to 15.4 City (don't do too much highway). Looking forward to installing new tonneau cover, maybe get a little more. (4500 miles now)

def wish i got an FX4 instead of the STX...the smaller engines DOES require you to hit the gas more harder to get to places....I especially hate it on the highway.

P.s. I think my MPG went upa bit since I removed the 400lbs Shurtrax from my bed yesterday morning!

Thanks guys, Guess I'm going to have to deal with the mileage - My 93 nissan seV6 got 21 till the day it fell apart. I think I shoulda just spent my money on a big old 80s ford, rather than get tied into a lease on a 30K truck. I have already dinged it up a few times, I'm afraid I'll get killed when I turn it in...But, thats what happpens to trucks- this ones just so damn pretty though...is it possible to insert a pic in my posts?

billindenver just curious have you had your truck in to the dealer for a reflash of the pcm lately?

I have a 04 screw with the 5.4 and 373 gears 18 in wheels and went up to the same size tires they put on the 4wds (mine is 2wd). Ford was kind enough to give me a free set of tires when mine wore out in 20k miles.

the reason i ask is my truck (after my reflash ) always gets 16-17 city and 18-19 highway . was getting 13-14 city 15-16 highway before the reflash

and i've towed with mine also and i must be honest i couldn't hardly tell that the stinkin trailer was back there
