Hello, New to site. Just picked up a 95 bronco in PA. High miles(175K). Condition is 90%. Its hard to believe the overall condition with that many miles. My question is: From a stop or a slow roll I get a thump from rear end area of truck when I accelerate. It's almost like play in the rear end, or in a bushing that is causing a slap when i get on the throttle.
This is my first bronco, but I have owned several Ford trucks, so I am quite familiar with Ford products.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
First off, welcome to FTE and the Big Bronco Forum.
Check the FAQ's (Red link in my signature or the same title at the top of this forum) as this is a rather common issue. The short answer is you probably need to service the slip shaft in the rear driveshaft.
Tomorrow, I will grease the slip shaft. I was going to lift it and check all bushings, but I think I will try this first. Thank for giving me a starting point. I'll let you know if that is the problem.
Thanks for the help

I was all set to replace my differential when I had the same symptom as you. The advice I got here was (as you now know) grease the slip shaft. Don't be shy with the grease, just make sure you re-seal it up tight. Mine went from a thunk to a thud to almost a yawn in just a few miles.
check the torque on the pinion nut when mine started makin noise it was the nut came loose and caused slack in the pinion (check it by pushing and pulling up and down on the rear of the drive shaft by the pinion if theres alot of up and down play yours might be lose too )tighten it back to specks with alot of red thread locker and checked all u joints and slip shaft now like new and all was cured good luck

Greased the slip joint & it's solved my problem. I am amazed that it was that simple of a problem. I guess I will pay for this one down the road, when the next problem is not so easy.

Thank for the replies.

No......to pay for the easy job of it this time, you just need to help the next guy on here who asks about a klunk coming from the rear when starting off from a dead stop.
What a difference greasing the slip joint makes! For years I have heard a thump in the rear when hitting a dip in the road and also the klunk when coming to a stop or leaving from a stop. I used Lucas gun grease from O'R..... because it said it was good hot or cold. When on a long hill and transmission downshift at full throttle the rear end would get loose and squirrely and that is much improved also with the now-slipping slip joint.
Does drive shaft need to be removed to grease slip joint? Or just pull boot back?
I would would disassemble the slip joint, so you can clean out the old grease, grease the splines with new grease and reassemble. Make sure you mark the two pieces so you put it back together in the same position. People have had a vibration if the slip joint isn't put back together in the same position.
