Drivetrain diagnosis
I have an '88 full-size Bronco, which I'm slowly trying to bring back to good running condition. I just had the 351 rebuilt, and it sounds and runs great, but now I have to turn to what appears to me to be a rear-end problem.
The truck is making a thumping noise that increases and decreases with acceleration and deceleration, and that feels as though it's coming from the rear-end. I don't think it's the motor mounts, because the thumping seems to be occuring in time with the rotation of the tires, but I don't think it's the tires, because they appear to be in good shape--there are no bubbles or other outward signs of tread separation.
I also don't think it's the transmission, because when I put the emergency brake and regular brake on with the truck in gear and accelerate briefly, there's no thumping noise.
Any ideas? It seems to me as though it has something to do with either the differential, the u-joint, the rear axle or the wheel bearings, but I'm definitely not qualified to say for sure.
Thanks for anyone's help....
Gary
