F-150 pulling a 5th wheel ?

hello everyone I have a 05 F-150 4x4 supercab 5.4 with 18" wheels 4-spd auto O/D it has the 3.37ratio limited slip axle 7200#GVWR package, trailer tow package so I know that the max trailer weight is 8800# and the GCWR is 14500# and my tire rating is 2601# max load with that info where I'm getting confused with is the payload rating at 1377# on the tire and load sticker the tires are P275/65RX18 OWL all-terrain I guess my ? is will this truck handle a 7480# 27' 5th wheel ? I also have overload leaf springs added.
Also this setup would be travling through the Mts.

thanks for any replys

Ford travelling through the mountains you might be pushing it. My neighbor has an 04 F150 with a fifth wheel hitch. He pulls a 32 footer with a gross rating of around 8000. He doesnt have overload springs and it drops his truck quite a bit. Power wise it is okay but even after hauling his trailer maybe 10-15 miles the rear wheels are covered with brake dust from braking. It doesnt seem so much that the truck itself has problems I would worry about brakes and power pulling in the mountains especially at high altitude.

I pull a 5th wheel with my 2004 FX4. It's a 24ft, 5100 pounds dry, about 6000 loaded I would guess. It does a very fine job at it too.

In town, I keep up with traffic easily while the truck shifts at aroun 3300-3500RPM. On the highway, it cruises at 65MPH with ease, with the over drive off of course. If on flat land and no head wind, I can use the OD.

The trailer is a Mid Profile with a height of about 136 inches.

I hope this helps you a bit...

I also have a 04 F150 w/ 5.4 and 3.55 gears. Got a 24' 5th comes in at 4800 dry but I guess I pull it wet at arounf 6500. Never had a problem
. I have 17" wheels and stock tires. With no load I get maybe 15MPG and with the trailer I get 12MPG. Just don't use the OD when pulling!

Hey thanks for the replys I been doing alot of reading and checking and I to think that my 05 F-150 should handle the 5th ok but going through the mts. may be tough so what I'm working on now is replacing the wife's truck (I still can't belive she wants to) it's a 02 F-150 supercrew FX4 sweet truck but it has 60K on it so I think we found a nice 04 F-250 crew 6.0 diesel with 23K loaded I think I'm heading in the right direction what do you think?

I agree seetwisted brakes are a gimme but they are over looked sometimes and need to be brought to attention thanks the 5th has I think 12" brakes (2004 model) and the tow unit will have new brake control unit. installed from the rv dealer I will have to self test them before the trip any sugestions?

thanks 1marko

I think you are making a wise decision. I don't think the F150 is the way to go for towing a heavy trailer. You'll be much happier with the Super Duty for that application.

I am no expert...

but I have helped build a couple of 5th wheels. We used them for work, sand blasting equip.,pallets of sand, granite, etc. We prebuilt a room addition/small living space and hauled it from Las Vegas Nv. to Dolan Springs Ariz., over the dam. That was a 5th wheel we built and lots of grades, switch backs and heat to test it all.And an old 65 1-ton ford with a 429 and automatic trans...EVERYTHING was pushed to it's limits. Yeah, brakes are a gimme and they should be good enough to balance out the truck so that nothing gets so hot you lose them. If the load is heavy enough you'll depend on the trailer brakes more than the truck's...especialy on grades and switch backs,if you want to keep it ALL in line. Loads of granite from northern California to Vegas, pulling the 5th wheel with a 3/4 ton pick-up show you how important the brakes are too. As for checking them out, there are some smart guys on this site and there have been some real good threads on that recently. You and your wife have fun! I'm jealous.

Your f150 WILL pull that 5'er through the mountains. It's just a matter of how fast you want to go. The brakes on your F150 are downright huge compared to the previous model, and stopping won't be an issue unless you are out side the weight limits of the truck and have a lousy brake controller.

Going to a bigger truck even though the trailer you have is within the specs of your current truck is downright foolish unless you are pulling this trailer more than 25-35% of the miles that you are putting on your truck.

This trailer is not a heavy trailer by any stretch of the imgination (as in out side the limits of your current truck), and defianitely doesn't require a diesel, a V10 will more than suffice.

Marko - If your 5th wheel is 7900# dry, I would also consider a 3/4 or 1 ton truck. V10 or Diesel would be my choices too... I think that given the size of your trailer, you are making a wise decision.

Marko,

I have a KZ RV - JAG 23JFS. It's a 2005. I see the 2006 is a little heavier.

Here is a link to the Jag 23JFS. http://www.kz-rv.com/jag/jag_23jfs.php

KZ also make the same trailer with fiberglass sidings... This one should be a little heavier as well...

Keep us posted...
