I searched, and didn't find anything that answered my question fully. Or maybe I just didn't see it.
We have a 2000 X Limited 4x4, with of course the hitch and trailer light plug on it. I need to put in a trailer brake controller for our camper, and I'm wondering if there's a particular brand that is preffered more than others? Also, how will I wire this in? Is there a plug under the dash somewhere? I read a post regarding an Expedition that mentioned some sore of plug under the dash, and getting an adaptor from Ford to plug in a brake controller. Is it the same on the X?
The Tekonsha Prodigy brake controller is the preferred brake with most towers. It strikes a excellent balance between ease of use, proportional braking, and ease of installation.
First, you buy the Prodigy brake controller, then you buy the wiring harness for your brand vehicle. The wiring harness for your Excursion is pretty much a plug and play item. There is a plug behind the dash that is accessable by taking off the fuse panel cover below the steering wheel. It is to the right of the opening just throught the hole made in the steel. Plug one end of the harness into it, and the other end into the Prodigy.
You can hardmount the Prodigy to the lower dash to the right of your right knee, or like sever of us, you can just put it in it's carrier and slide it into the cubby, attached with double sided tape or Velcro.
Prices vary greatly on this item, so shop around.
Brakecontroller.com has a special right now, buy a Prodigy at 124.95 and get a harness free.

Thanks very much for the info and the link! I'm glad this is going to be an easy install, and that's an excellent price. I'll check out the RV forums too, sounds like some good info.
Brake controller ordered, swaybar pending, I'm fabbing up some traction bars, and the maintenance is done on both the trailer and the truck. I've got half the summer weekends booked at a campground in S. NH.

JUST half the summer booked? I had to book all the way into next year to get some of the places (Normandy Farms, Mass & Watkins Glen, NY) we wanted for our new Sunnybrook Trailer
Now, if my truck will only get done...just got it out of the diesel shop for with a new Banks system, having it painted this week and then off for suspension and braking tweaks...CAN'T WAIT

Yeah, we got a later start this year with booking weekends. Part of it was due to some uncertainty in my wife's schedule. She's a nurse, and works every other weekend, and we weren't sure of her weekends on. Always something, I tell ya!
Are you from the Mass area? We don't go to Normandy Farms too much anymore, last time I checked it was a little on the pricey side for us. I've found some new good places though, Pilgrim Pines in Swanze (sp?) NH, and a couple in RI. Names escape me at this point though....
Too bad about Normandy, that's where I started camping with my wife, and where I learned to love it. Spent many a night with the "boys", a fire, and a cooler out in the Safari fields. Heck, we even worked there a few times. My inlaws do the country line dance thing. She instructs, he DJ's. We've run into a couple of weekends that we had to work for them, because they had prior commitments. It was a lot of fun!

No...we're Jersey Folks...wanted a central place in Mass to stay for 2 weeks...so we could overnite to the Cape and then "mooch" around north of Boston.....And yes, it's a bit pricier than most, but...hey, "you only live once!"

Well, it is worth the price you pay. There's a lot to do at the campground, and it's one of the cleanest places we've ever camped at. Believe me, if I had the money, we'd spend every weekend there!
IMHO the Jordan Ultima is THE BEST brake controller made, period! It is the only brake controller I have ever seen that works in reverse on an inclined (very important backing downhill in the winter). It is tied to your braking system in a manner that makes the trailer react exactly like the tow vehicle. A little less than the prodigy, but superior in every way...again, IMHO.

by the way, I am not associated with the company in any fashion. I have had them on my last 3 trucks and wont buy anything else. try one and you wont either.
