Though I'd post a quick update, spent about 6 hours to get the transmission out, 1 hour of prep work to the garage and about 1 hour to remove the turbo. drivelines came off easy, transfer case came off pretty easy, it is heavy, but not as heavy as I thought it would have been. I used transmission jack on it, no since in lifting anything I don't have to. Transmission removal was a piece of cake actually. Hardest part was crawling in and out of under the truck, man I need a creeper. I removed the turbo to get to the top passenger bolt on the tranny, it holds the dip stick tube as well. No problems with removing the turbo either. Some WD40 goes a long ways. Rebuilt turbo in about an hour.
I started the long process of taking the tranny apart, wish I would of set up a longer table, ran out of space to label and keep everyting in order. Anyway about 45% put back together, hopefully will finish tonight. Actually pretty easy to do, just time consuming keeping it all straight. Total time into the project is about 13 hours.
All right not so quick of an update but this is where I am at. I will post some pictures of steps along the way.
Well, tranny is done, spent another 7 hrs today on it, was going to upload some pics, but now the camera battery is dead. Overall, I'd say pretty fair as far as difficulty, one of those if you buy the $200 specialty tool, it would make it a very simple task. I am going to put it back in the truck next Monday. Pretty confident everything is back together correctly, keep the fingers crossed and wait til Monday. The rebuild kit I got was from txchange.com out of Portland, OR. All clutches steels, seals, and T/C for @1100. Only bummer part about this whole deal. Judging by the internals, I think mine was already rebuilt once. The clutches looked to be in great shape. Had I known that, I would of just changed the T/C as it was junk, but without tearing it apart, no way of telling. But, I know for sure now it is good to go.
Do you have any prior experience with tranny rebuilds or is this your first?
Nope, first one I have rebuilt, done many other things, got the manuals for it, did some research and decided to try it at least once. Having done it once, next one would be a lot easier.

Yeah, the specialty tools, bench, tranny stand to flip it, & truly knowing what you are doing, it would probably only take a day to do it all. I did a lot of picture taking, and referencing to the manual I had, then doing it again just to make sure I was right, sometime three or four time just because it would be easire to make ablsolute now then afterwards. I am excited to put it back in, half tempted to stay up today and do it, but then it really makes the night shift drag.
which kit did you get from txchange.com? they have some on ebay for $615. with converter and all rebuild parts. ebay item number 8045336760. is that the same as what you got? wonder if they offer an upgrade to a triple disc converter?

I was thinking about that same kit, then I emailed them to talk about it, Spencer said they also had a HD upgrade kit that included alto clutches and Kolene steels. The T/C is also a Triple Disc with a lower stall. The upgraded kit is the one I got, total cost after core return is right around 1100, at least that is what he quoted me and that is what ended up at my door step.
is your clutch kit and rebuild parts designed for more HP, or are they just stock replacements. my next thing is the TC, and this sounds like a good deal.
It is an upgraded kit to handle more power and torque, the 615 kit is pretty much an oem replacement. The reason I went with these guys is I got the entire kit and HD T/C for pretty close to the same price as a HD T/C.
Went for a ride tonight, I must say it is nice to be riding in the truck again So first impressions, Tranny shifts much firmer now, don't know if it needs a break in period or not, but will definately be taking it easy for a 100 miles or so. Reprogramming kit for shifts I don't like, a little too firm, the new springs for manual gear selection rocks Turn O/D off, bam it is there, not harsh just there, nice engine braking, same thing with 2 and 1, select those gears and it is there, full engage. Very impressed by that part. More over, I glad everything seems to be working.
Now I know the question: Would I do it again? Yes, definately, but would wait until summer when it is warmer. This mornings 3 inches of snow really sucked, flat out a PITA. Snow covered my bolts I was looking for in the bed, forget that is where I put them, so it took a while to put the tranny cross brace in cause I couldn't find the right Bolts!!! Oh Yeah, lost a boot clamp because I forgot to tighten on clamp down, blew the boot clean off, thought it was funny actually, just lost the clamp and have to get another one.
Congratulations, Mike, on successfully getting all the worms back into the can!
It would be fun to have one on the bench to go through if it wasn't the one out of my daily driver that I've got to have on the road.
But I still have that imagined picture in my head of taking that last bolt out of the valve body and having springs and check-***** flying across the garage everywhere. I didn't, however, have any fear of the Sonnax valve and springs install. Dunno....
We all have our own phobias. Mine is auto-trannies. Most everything else seems simple.

Pop
Ever rebuild a manual transmission or older transfercase (205/203)? THERE is a PITA.
Most use hundreds of thousands (slight exaggeration) of stupid tiny needle bearings that fall out all over the place and have to be glued in place with vaseline or transgoo before you can go back together.
Rebuilt a bunch of manual trannies. I use the old-style, "thick", wheel-bearing grease.
But yes, I just hate it when there's a needle stuck to the end of the shaft when I finish driving it flush, knowing there's only one thing I can do........
