Air Compressor Regulator?

I recently bought a sand blast cabinet. The instructions state that the maximum psi is 40-80lbs. My sears 6hp air compressor cutoff is 120 lbs. psi. How do I cut do the pressure to 40-80?

Thanks.

You can either adjust the cutoff pressure if it is an adjustable type or you can buy a pressure regulator at any tool store that carries compressors. Look up the SCFM of your compressor and the blast cabinet's air consumption and get a unit with ratings higher than the larger of the two.

Eric is correct if you dont have a regulator, however I find it impossible to believe that a 6HP compressor came with out one.

How many guages does your compressor have? one or two? If it has two, I assume you have a regulator already installed. (it would be the guage closest to the hookup for your hose)- or the one furthest from the actual tank.

additionally I highly recommed earlier posts by Eric and others that deal with keeping moisture out. (a real headache when blasting)

You might not need a regulator. There will be a significant pressure drop through the hose (and connectors) from the compressor to the blast cabinet (which will depend on the length and size of hose, number and type of couplers, and the air volume you're drawing). Check the pressure gauge at the blast cabinet while you're blasting.

I use a regulator when spray painting, but for air tools and the siphon blaster I need all the pressure I can get once the air has gone through 100' of hose.

The pressure rating that you have on the blast cabinet may be either a pressure range required for operation, or a max static pressure rating. It is probably the first, in which case the length of hose and fittings could restrict the operating pressure enough. A ball valve in the line might work also. Check the pressure guage while the unit is operating like Angus said.

It only has one gauge, near the hose. Based on what you guys have told me here, I need to install a regulator. I was surprised when I did not find one on the compressor.

Thanks for the information.

Lee

PS This is a great site. I just found it yesterday.

Have you checked out all the other forums yet? When you get a chance read thru the rest of the posts in this section. There are a lot of interesting ideas and good info topics here.

If you are setting up a blast cabinet make sure you read the info on getting the water out here and several other posts about compressors.

There is also a topic on blasting media.
