I was looking at the ididit steering columns and was curious what the difference is between the '77 and earlier columns and the '78-'79 ones. I wrote ididit and they simply said they were year specific. Thanks.
OK, just got off the phone with ididit and they said the two year(s) are not interchangeable. In addition they use a GM style end on the steering column so my new Flaming River steering shaft can't be used. So much for that idea.
Well the plot thickens. I was going through the 2006 Grant catalouge and saw that their mounting kits again went up to '77 and then '78-'79 as a seperate kit. What would be different for mounting the steering wheel.
My '77 has been hit or miss for parts fittting meant for that year.
The whole column changed in '78. The size of the steering wheel, the collar size, turnsignal switch and harness are all different. The '76 and older highboys even had a longer column and shaft.
Thanks, that's what I wanted to be sure of. I've sometimes run into problems with parts when you have a truck the year of a design change. I'm pretty sure my column is the '77.
I went to your gallery to checkout your truck,VERY NICE! I love the engine and engine compartment! Did I sell you a set of solid motor mounts recently?
I just put a 76 F-150 supercab from a 2wd on my 78 F-250 4wd frame...obviously the steering columns are different between 4wd and 2wd, one has a u-joint and one has a rag-joint...so i swapped the column from the old F-250 cab into the new replacement cab.....it bolted right in, but i have yet to dive into the wiring, the connector looks the same but the NSS issue might be a problem for me...
Greenhighboy, yes that was me. Thanks again, the mounts are great. I've got to get my projects under control. Building an off-road beater for mud fun and trying to finish the cradle for my nitrous bottles on the street truck. I picked up two 50# brushed aluminum bottles for free but it's costing me for the total fuel system upgrade, nitrous system, gauges, cradle and on and on.........funny how much free stuff costs
I also heard back from Grant wheels and the reply was:
"You will have to pull the original wheel to tell which column you have.
Under the wheel are either one or two spring loaded copper pins that
ride on a contact disc on the back of the wheel.
If you have one pin, you have the '70-'77 column and need kit 3285.
If you have 2 pins, you have the '78-'91 column and need kit 3249."
