I was wondering if anyone knew the size of the rears in the 82s, as well as what were standard gears, and if they had trac-lok or not. Also was wondering if anyone knew the width on one also. I know someone with an 82, and I'm looking to upgrade the rear in my classic stang. If it's a do-able task I can get the rear from a friend and have it narrowed, but I'd like it to have good set of low gears (3.5:1 to 3.8:1) and possibly trac loc.
Thanks guys.

is it a half ton, 3/4 ton etc. if it is a half ton it is a 9" i saw some where on here a list for the differnt widths of the rear ends. you might try posting this in the trans/differential fourm, im sure a mod will move it soon. it would be a little more helpful if we had more info on the truck.
ok, when you look at it tomorrow, there should be a little metal tag hanging off 1 of the bolts that holds the cover on the rear end or 3rd member in if its a 9", get the numbers off that and post them that will tell you what gears you have and if it has track loc or not and what size the ring gear is.
Thanks man. Sorry, I didn't catch your post before I went and saw it. It's a pretty good lookin lil' ol' truck. It's actually an 81 F150 Flairside. It has an 83 5.0 H.O. motor in it. It is indeed a 9" rear. It's beefy and has the bolt pattern of a 9. I pulled the axle code off of the VIN. The axle code for it is 15, if that helps with dtermining the gears? If I check it out again I'll check for the tag on one of the bolts.
It's not the actual VIN...It's the VIN tag on the door jam of the driver side door. It contains the vin as well as axle code, body code, transmission code, year produced, and something else, I can't remember
As much as I want the extra rigidity of a 9" in my stang, I don't think itd be worth it to buy one and still have to buy gears if I can find one out there with everything I'm looking for. Especially since I'd have to drop some extra money to have it narrowed.
Great site you guys got here, thanks for the help! I'll be sure to let a friend with an 86 F150 Lariat know about you guys. God knows he could use you alls help every once in awile, lol!
The rear end is the best of the bunch of 9" due to the axle bearing setup. It would be way to wide for your mustang unless it have it narrowed. Don't forget the bolt pattern is way different, and the axles will be 31 spline, so you would have to have custom axles made. At that point, you will have to do some custom brake swapping to match the new pattern. This is a lot of work for very little gain.
